Attack on Titan Episode 2: That Day: The Fall of Zhiganshina (2)

Crows pick at the corpses of Shiganshina District's dead citizens as a religious man frantically recites from his book amid the chaos of fleeing townsfolk. A Titan confronts and devours him, dropping his book, while another woman hiding in an alley is plucked up and eaten screaming.

Eren, recovering from shock, attacks Hannes with punches for fleeing without saving his mother, insisting they could have if given more time. Hannes explains Eren lacks the strength and admits his own lack of courage to face the Titan, leaving both tearful as they head toward Wall Maria.

Mikasa, head aching, vaguely recalls a dead man and woman, sensing familiarity in the horror.

A Garrison soldier herds survivors onto ships for evacuation through the inner gate, defending futilely as Hannes and another officer briefly debate closing the gate on stranded comrades or leaving it open. An **Armored Titan** suddenly charges and smashes through the inner gate, killing the defenders and allowing more Titans inside.

Eren realizes in despair he can never return home, vowing with fury to kill every last Titan.

Aboard the boat in Trost District of Wall Rose, Eren flashes back to his father forcefully injecting something into his body and urging him to remember "the key" around his neck.

Eren lashes out at soldiers beating him, telling Armin they haven't truly seen Titans yet. Armin intervenes with apologies. Eren throws bread back at Armin, rejecting a parasitic life inside the walls and vowing to retake Wall Maria; Mikasa knocks him out, insisting they must survive first and shoving bread into his mouth.

Days later, survivors till land to combat food shortages. In 846, 12% of the population sacrifices themselves to fight for Wall Maria, easing famine pressures.

Eren declares to others his intent to join the Survey Corps and defeat the Titans. The episode ends at the 104th Trainee Corps enlistment, where Keith Shadis announces three years of training for the recruits.
