Attack on Titan Episode 28: Southwestward

In the ruins of Ragako, Conny stands by his house where a small-limbed Titan lies. Reiner and Bertholdt join him, and Conny tearfully reports that no survivors were found. Reiner comforts him. Gelgar asks if any bodies were seen, and the three recruits confirm they saw none. Gelgar wonders at this, while Lynne suggests the villagers escaped to Wall Sina before the Titans arrived. Conny is cheered by this idea, but Gelgar remains privately skeptical, noting the destroyed houses had no blood or gore, and the horses were still tied up in the stables.

The Scouts prepare to depart. As Conny mounts his horse, the Titan on his house speaks, saying "Wel...come...home...." Conny stares in shock until Reiner urges him to join the others. Conny tries to explain, mentioning his mother, but Reiner reminds him of their urgent mission. Conny agrees and joins Reiner and Gelgar's squad.

Seven hours after the Titan sighting, Nanaba's team finishes warning towns in Wall Rose. Their next task is to find the breach in the Wall. Ymir asks to withdraw with Christa, but Nanaba denies the request, stating recruits might be needed to report to the interior. Christa tells Ymir she accepts the risks but wonders why Ymir joined the Scout Regiment with her. Ymir claims she didn't do it for Christa, but Christa points out Ymir could have ranked higher in the 104th Cadet Corps but allowed Christa to outrank her. Christa asks if Ymir's interest in her relates to her family, and Ymir confirms it, saying she fights for her own sake. Christa seems relieved.

Two hours later, at an eastern defensive line, Captain Kitz Woermann leads a blockade of cannons, crippling Titans as Captain Rico Brzenska delivers killing blows. The Garrison troops celebrate, but Rico states their defense won't hold against a swarm of Titans and feels something is wrong with the invasion. Elsewhere, Captain Hannes feels the same as his team searches Wall Rose for the breach, concerned by the lack of Titans in their area.

Later that night, 11 hours after the sighting, Gelgar's team slowly investigates Wall Rose for a breach, feeling the tension of Titans in the darkness. Nanaba's team approaches, and Nanaba asks Gelgar about the breach, but Gelgar reports his team found none either. They consider if they missed it, but Henning says a breach large enough for Titans wouldn't be overlooked. The teams consider searching again, but the recruits and horses are tired. Seeing the ruins of a castle nearby, the Scouts decide to rest there and continue their search in the morning.

In Wall Sina, Scouts from the Stohess assault ride to Ehrmich District. Levi notices Hange looking at a crystal and asks if their hobbies are dull. Hange explains it's a fragment of the Female Titan's hardened skin, which didn't evaporate. Hange recalls earlier research showing a fragmented piece of Wall Sina had the same composition.

Hange concludes that the Walls must be barriers of humongous Titans, as Armin had theorized. Armin tries to propose an idea, but Hange asks him to let them finish. Given the connection between the Walls and Titan hardening, Hange proposes Eren could use his Titan form to harden his skin and seal the breach in Wall Maria.

Armin also suggests a nighttime expedition when Titans are inactive. Eren seems unsure of his ability, but Levi states they have no choice and Eren must do it for humanity's survival. Eren accepts, thinking of his father's basement where the secrets of the Titans supposedly lie. Shortly after, the Scouts arrive in Ehrmich.

In Ehrmich, Nick observes many refugees. Levi tells him this is the result of a lost Wall and the silence from the Order of the Walls, warning that all humanity faces this fate if the church remains silent. Hange asks Nick if he will remain silent, and Nick says his vow hasn't changed.

However, Nick informs the Scouts that an individual who joined the Regiment that year has the right to speak truths about the Walls that the Order cannot.

As Nick reveals the individual's identity, Sasha returns from Wall Rose with a message for Hange. Eren, Mikasa, and Armin recognize the name Nick speaks. Hange realizes any recruits in the Scout Regiment would be on the front lines. Before they depart, Sasha delivers her message to Hange and receives a steamed potato. Hange asks the other recruits about the individual Nick mentioned, and they describe a short, young, blonde girl often seen with Ymir. Hange recognizes the name "Ymir."

At Utgard Castle, Reiner confronts Ymir in a storage room, discovering something about her as she looks at him with dread. Their conversation is cut short when Lynne wakes the recruits.

From the top of the castle, the Scouts see a horde of Titans moving despite the absence of sunlight. Conny spots the Beast Titan among them, heading for Wall Rose, and the others look on in shock. On the ground, the Titans begin to attack the tower.

Meanwhile, in Ehrmich, Hange finishes delivering a plan of action to the other Scouts. Before their departure, Levi speaks with the recruits. He tells Armin to cooperate with Hange to form a plan, and he tells Mikasa to protect Eren, then turns to Eren.

At Utgard, Gelgar begins to panic as Titans try to break through the front door. He draws his blades in anger, blaming the Titans for his inability to have a drink, and the other three Scout Regiment leaders join him. Nanaba tells the recruits to stand aside while the leaders use their ODM gear. The Scouts begin battling the Titans as the Beast Titan climbs Wall Rose.

In Ehrmich, Levi tells Eren to restrain himself in future battles to avoid mistakes.

In the wilderness of Wall Rose, Hange sets a course for the Scouts to assist in locating the breach, and they ride for Utgard Castle.
