Attack on Titan Episode 39: Pain

As Kenny prepares to fire his guns at Levi, Levi throws a blade at him. Kenny deflects the blade and fires back, but Levi avoids the shot by hiding under his cloak. Seeing his squad mates dead, Levi makes a quick escape, pursued by Kenny and his squad.

On a wagon, Keiji hears gunshots and sees members of Kenny's squad approaching. He tells Eren and Historia to stay in the carriage and speeds up, but the pursuers are already in range. They fire grappling hooks at the carriage, tearing off its top and exposing Eren and Historia. Eren picks up a rifle, but both he and Historia are hit with tranquilizers and knocked out. Keiji is then shot and killed.

Levi arrives as one of the pursuers takes over the wagon and chases after it. However, other members of Kenny's squad intercept him, forcing him to retreat. With Kenny and his squad chasing him, Levi dives into a nearby bar to hide, startling the patrons.

Thinking he has Levi cornered, Kenny confidently enters the bar to confront him. The two briefly discuss their past and motivations. Levi then uses the bar owner's gun to shoot Kenny from under the bar counter, blasting him out of the building.

Thanking the bar owner for the gun, Levi throws a chair out of the window as a decoy, drawing fire from Kenny's squad outside. Levi then jumps out the window, fires a grappling hook at one of the soldiers, and uses him as a shield against a barrage of shots from two other soldiers. Before they can reload, Levi rushes between them, slicing them with his blades. Hearing the gunshots, Squad Levi heads towards the fighting.

Outside the bar, Kenny slowly gets up, lamenting to Traute that he forgot bar owners can carry guns for self-defense and commenting on how much Levi has grown. As Squad Levi joins Levi, he orders them to rescue Eren and Historia and kill any enemies in their way. In the ensuing fight, Armin and Jean briefly take control of the wagon, with Armin killing the previous driver to save Jean. However, when more members of Kenny's squad appear from behind, Levi and Sasha are forced to rescue Armin and Jean, and they abandon the chase.

In the royal capital of Mitras, royal officials discuss the retrieval of Eren and Historia in the palace's throne room, deciding to handle the matter through legal means. A messenger then arrives from Rod Reiss with news that he has successfully captured Eren and Historia. The royal officials conclude that no further action is needed.

In the military barracks, Erwin is visited by his old comrade Nile Dawk, who was in charge of confiscating his personal effects. Erwin muses about their past and expresses distrust of the government's ability to secure humanity's future, to Nile's dismay. After Nile leaves, Hange and Mobilt approach Erwin with news of Eren and Historia's capture by the Military Police and their suspicion that Eren might be eaten.

Outside an abandoned building where Dimo Reeves and his men are being held, Armin struggles with having killed another person. He asks Mikasa if she experienced this when she first killed a human. She does not reply but comforts him. Inside the building, Levi also comforts Armin, telling him that Jean would not be alive if Armin had not acted. Afterwards, Levi and Mikasa speak with Dimo Reeves, and Levi convinces him to help them in exchange for their assistance in ensuring the survival of the people of Trost District.

Under the pretense of being on the side of the MPs, Dimo Reeves leads two Interior Squad members, Ralph and Sannes, to the location of Levi's hideout. It is a trap set by Levi's squad, and the two MPs are knocked out and imprisoned by the Scouts. Sannes is tortured by Levi and Hange but refuses to reveal information due to his loyalty to the King. Only after Levi and Hange trick him into believing that Ralph had betrayed him does Sannes relent, revealing that the Reiss family is the true royal family. The Scouts realize that Historia is the true successor to the throne and that both she and Eren would be with Rod Reiss.

Elsewhere, Kenny finds and kills Dimo Reeves for his defection to the Scouts, while Dimo's son, Flegel, silently witnesses the act from around a corner. Before leaving, Kenny states that Levi would show up even if they did nothing, as he knows Levi's personality, having raised him.

In a windowed room at an unknown location, Rod Reiss reunites with his daughter, Historia. He hugs Historia and apologizes to her, while a bound and gagged Eren watches from the side.
