Full recap

Eren stands speechless over the burned body of his childhood friend, Armin. He hears a Titan land in the distance and turns to see a four-legged Titan carrying a man with marks around his face. Eren quickly holds the unconscious Bertholdt hostage, placing his blade at his throat. The man on the four-legged Titan, who Eren believes is the Beast Titan, asks if Eren is Eren Jaeger and says he looks nothing like his father. He claims they are both victims of Eren's father and that Eren has been brainwashed. Eren notices the man resembles his father.

The man looks up in consternation as Levi, having survived his battle, climbs to the top of the Wall. The man calls their fight a draw, apologizes to Bertholdt, and tells Eren he will return for him one day as the four-legged Titan gallops away.

Levi lands near Eren, having used the last of his gas. He demands Eren's blades and gas to pursue the man. As Eren begins to comply, he hears Armin gasp for breath.

Elsewhere, Hange asks a dismembered Reiner about a metal case in his chest pocket. Reiner says it is a letter from Ymir for Christa. Hange agrees to deliver it after inspection. Hange draws a blade, feeling Reiner is disinclined to talk. Jean asks Hange to wait, suggesting they could steal Reiner's power. He reminds Hange that guidelines were set for the single Titan injection, expecting they might take the powers of the Beast, Armored, or Colossal Titans, which could also revive a dying soldier.

Hange feels the conditions are not met, as Levi has the injection but his status is unknown, and they may not have time to find him. Hange is also unsure if cutting off Reiner's head would kill him. Jean argues this is unlike Hange and questions how they can defeat Titans if they back down due to lack of knowledge. Hange considers this and asks Mikasa to check on Eren and Armin, then refill her gas and retrieve the injection from Levi. If she cannot, she is to fire a signal flare to end Reiner. Mikasa agrees and flies off.

Mikasa finds Eren bent over Armin, encouraging him to breathe. Eren urgently asks Levi for the syringe so Armin can eat Bertholdt. Levi, after a moment, agrees and pulls out the injection case. Mikasa fires a signal flare. Before Hange can kill Reiner, the four-legged Titan gallops up. Jean pulls Hange out of the way before the Titan can eat them. Hange sees the four-legged Titan pick up Reiner in its mouth and run away with him and the man. Jean blames himself, but Hange reminds him they made the final decision. Hange decides they should regroup.

As Levi is about to give Eren the injection, Floch climbs onto the rooftop carrying a severely wounded but alive Erwin. Floch has been looking for Levi, hoping the injection could save Erwin. Levi takes back the injection, has Floch bring Erwin onto the roof, and confirms Erwin is still breathing. Levi announces Erwin will receive the injection. Eren is horrified, reminding Levi he agreed to use it on Armin. Levi responds he will revive the one who can save humanity. He hears a blade drawn and sees Mikasa with tears in her eyes.

On the Wall, the man surveys the district and notes Reiner was lucky to survive.

Levi asks Eren and Mikasa if they understand what they are doing, reminding them Erwin is their commander and to stay out of his way. Eren grabs the serum in Levi's hand, and Levi orders him to control his emotions. Eren furiously asks why Levi didn't use the serum on Armin immediately. Levi admits he considered Erwin might be alive, and now that Erwin is here, he will receive it. Eren tightens his grip, and Levi strikes Eren, knocking out teeth and sending him flying. Outraged, Mikasa lunges at Levi, putting her blade to his throat. She realizes Levi is weakened and believes she can take the injection by force.

Levi and Floch appeal to Mikasa's reason, emphasizing the need to save Erwin for humanity. Eren, barely able to speak, counters that losing Armin would be no different. He recounts Armin's past successes, including discovering Annie's identity, planning to save Trost, thinking of moving soldiers at night, and finding Reiner and defeating Bertholdt. Eren believes Armin will save humanity.

Mikasa renews her efforts to take the injection, but Floch stands up to her, stating she is not the only one who has suffered. Floch reveals all the Scouts on the other side of the Wall were killed by the Beast Titan's barrage, as part of Erwin's plan. Floch found Erwin and considered killing him, but then saw Levi killing Titans and remembered the injection. Floch believes it takes a devil to fight Titans and that he was spared to bring Erwin back.

Floch tries to take the injection, and Mikasa moves to intercept him, but Hange grabs her first, pulling her away. The rest of the squad has arrived. Levi gets up and opens the injection case, preparing to inject Erwin. Mikasa screams, and Hange reminds her of their need for Erwin and the pain of loss. Hange explains they are alive because Moblit pushed them into a well to escape a transformation blast. Hange states that while there are many they wish to bring back, there comes a time to say farewell and move forward.

Hearing this, Mikasa relents. Levi prepares the injection. Eren weakly pulls at Levi's leg, asking if he knows about the sea. Despite Floch's intervention, Eren tells Levi about Armin's dream to see the sea, admitting that while he was driven by hatred, Armin is different and has his own dreams. Levi glances at Armin's body, then orders everyone to clear out so he can have Erwin eat Bertholdt. The group relocates, with Floch taking Eren away. Levi is left alone.

Levi drags Bertholdt into position, thinking about Erwin and Armin's dreams. He takes Erwin's arm and prepares to inject him when Erwin suddenly lifts his arm, appearing to believe he is in his father's classroom. Delirious, Erwin asks his father how they can know for sure there are no more humans outside the Walls. Levi, surprised, remembers asking Erwin to give up his dream and his uncle's words about people needing something to drive them. Remembering Erwin's gratitude, Levi makes his choice.

Bertholdt wakes to see a small blond Titan looming over him. He struggles and notices his former friends watching from rooftops. Bertholdt panics, crying out for help, but to no avail. As he screams for Annie and Reiner, Armin's Titan closes its jaws on his head and devours him.

Floch asks Levi why he changed his mind as Levi and Hange sit beside Erwin's body. Levi explains that Erwin became a devil because it was necessary, and he was now free. Levi decided it was time to let him rest, apologizing that he couldn't kill the Beast Titan as promised. Hange inspects Erwin and confirms he has passed away.

Behind them, the blond Titan collapses. Eren, Mikasa, and the other cadets surround it as Armin emerges from the Titan, unharmed and healed.
