Attack on Titan Episode 82: Sunset

In Trost District, Military Police officers rescue survivors after the Walls collapsed and Wall Titans began marching. Hitch Dreyse tends to an injured woman who laments her destroyed home. Nearby, people argue about whether Eren Jaeger's actions are justified given the casualties. Hitch observes the brewing conflict.

Hitch goes to organize riot gear and notices damp footprints leading from the basement. She follows them to a room where Annie Leonhart ambushes her, threatening her throat. Hitch throws Annie, commenting on her weakness. Annie then realizes she attacked her former roommate.

While calling for help, Hitch notices Annie is injured. Annie threatens to transform into the Female Titan if Hitch doesn't comply, but Hitch believes Annie is too weak to do so. Annie suggests they won't know until she tries, leaving Hitch to decide whether to call her bluff.

Hitch ultimately doesn't call her bluff and takes Annie to the stables so she can leave town. Hitch states she won't have to see Annie's face in the basement anymore. Annie replies that she won't have to listen to Hitch's rants about men, revealing she was conscious inside her crystal, describing it as being in a distant dream. Annie asks if Eren is serious about destroying the world.

The two ride out on a single horse. Annie marvels at the sight of the marching Wall Titans. Hitch directs Annie's attention to the trampled town below, stating her only meaningful job as a soldier has been cleaning up after people like Annie and Eren. Hitch asks Annie how she feels seeing the crushed bodies in pursuit of her mission. Annie realizes the Warriors were callous and explains they were praised for killing outsiders, civilians, and soldiers, but saving the world never mattered to her.

Annie explains she was abandoned by her birth parents and adopted by a foreign Eldian who wanted a child to become a Warrior for a better life. He trained her in martial arts, and she felt her only value to him was as a potential Warrior. When she grew strong enough to defeat him, she beat him severely as repayment for his brutal training. Despite this, he was happy, telling her she could now kill even without a weapon. Due to her upbringing, Annie was uncaring about whether people lived or died, including herself.

Before she left for Paradis Island, the man who adopted her apologized for everything he put her through, saying his teachings were wrong and pleading for her to return. Annie now knows a father is waiting for her and that others also have important people. She believes her actions are unforgivable but would repeat them to return to her father. Hitch thanks Annie for confiding in her, but notes that given the current situation, Annie will only find rubble and a corpse.

In Liberio, Eldians in the internment zone try to explain the coming rumbling and their shared dream to Marleyan guards at the gate. The guards are concerned but skeptical, believing the Eldians are using it as an excuse to escape. Leonhart points out that Eldians in all internment camps will be saying the same thing, but the guards refuse to listen. They point their weapons and prepare to arrest the gathered Eldians. One guard kicks a kneeling Leonhart, who remembers his request for Annie to return and her promise to do so. He turns to fight the guard.

In Shiganshina District, Surma warns Keith Sadies that the fort is being taken over by the Jaegerists and he should escape. Keith refuses, stating the military he knew is dead and he has no place. He foresees the Jaegerists controlling the island and purging people like him. Surma and other cadets insist on protecting him, but Keith refuses, telling them to obey the Jaegerists so they might one day have the fight they want.

Elsewhere, Armin Arlelt prepares to chase after Conny Springer, though Mikasa Ackermann doubts he will reach Ragako in time. Armin feels he must try, even if he fails, to earn Gabi Braun's trust. Through Gabi, they might reach Reiner Braun and the Cart Titan. He believes as long as the Nine Titans exist, there's a risk of another war over their power. He is tense and exhausted but will try to prevent that, even if it means telling Conny his mother should remain a Titan.

As he prepares to leave, Mikasa asks what she should do. Armin tells her to help Jean Kirschtein and think for herself. When she asks about Eren, Armin snaps, stating he has no idea what they can do about him. He adds that they don't know if Hange Zoë and Levi Ackermann are alive or if Floch Forster will point a gun at them. He explains the military has collapsed, everything is chaotic, and he cannot afford to think about Eren right now.

Seeing Mikasa hurt by his words, he apologizes, saying Erwin Smith wouldn't have snapped at her. Armin believes he was the wrong person to have been saved and then leaves. Mikasa turns and notices her scarf is no longer where she left it.

As Armin and Nicolo prepare horses, Artur Braus comforts Gabi, saying Conny would hesitate to sacrifice Falco Grice's life, even for his mother. Kaya tells Gabi to take care as she rides off with Armin.

On an upper floor of the fort, Floch shoots the hand of an Anti-Marleyan Volunteer. When Jean protests, Floch says he is helping the man understand their situation and will not tolerate backtalk. When Jean asks who made him king, Floch announces that Eren explained his plan to him ten months ago. Floch knew Eren intended to manipulate Zeke Jaeger to obtain the Founding Titan's power and formed the Jaegerists to help him. He tells the gathered Volunteers they have lost their leader and military backing, and their homelands will soon be destroyed. However, if any wish to aid the new Eldian Empire, they will be welcomed as fellow Eldians.

When the man Floch shot declares he will never join, Floch kills him, telling the other Volunteers that pride is not worth dying for. He suggests living in submission is better and then has the remaining Volunteers locked up to think.

Just then, Mikasa arrives and asks a shaken Jean what happened. Floch answers, stating he is working on Eren's behalf. While Eren solves external problems, Floch handles internal ones. He tells them that after surviving the hell of four years prior, freedom is finally within reach. They will no longer have to fight and can live as they wish. He appeals to Jean's old dream of living in the interior as part of the Military Police, saying he could do that now as a hero. Jean breaks out of his stupor upon hearing Floch's description of his old self and notices Onyankopon giving him a look. Mikasa asks Floch what happened to Hange and Levi, and Floch claims they were killed by Zeke.

As the sun sets, Falco tells Conny he appreciates his help but doesn't understand why they are going north. Conny says it's safer than the south and he's taking Falco to a hospital for his amnesia. He claims he found Falco alone and doing this is a soldier's duty, reminding Conny of his desire to be a soldier his family would be proud of. He knows he can't save the rest of his family but can still save his mother. Oblivious, Falco thanks Conny for being helpful, while thinking he needs to get back south as he doesn't remember what happened to Gabi and his brother Colt Grice before he passed out. He also has an uneasy feeling he has met Conny before.

Outside Shiganshina District, Pieck Finger remarks that the airships appear to be heading back to Marley. She suspects they have been left for dead, but Theo Magath believes the airships are right to warn their homeland. Pieck asks if there's any way to stop this now. Magath begins to say there isn't when Hange approaches them, startling Pieck, who nearly devours Hange with her Cart Titan.

She stops short as Hange protests they are unarmed. Seeing their continued concern, Hange gestures to a makeshift cart nearby and tells Magath and Pieck not to worry. The person in the litter is harmless and too stubborn to die.
