Breaking Bad Episode 51: Dead Freight

A young boy rides his dirt bike through the desert, captures a tarantula in a jar, and heads toward a distant freight train. Walter White visits his brother-in-law Hank Schrader at Hank’s new DEA office as ASAC head, feigning emotional distress over his failing marriage to Skyler to lure Hank out of the room; while Hank is away, Walt installs covert listening devices on Hank’s computer and inside a picture frame on the desk.

Later, Walt, Jesse Pinkman, and Mike Ehrmantraut take Lydia Rodarte-Quayle to an abandoned building’s basement to interrogate her about a GPS tracker found on a Madrigal methylamine barrel. Walt and Mike believe Lydia planted it and vote to kill her, but Jesse opposes the plan, insisting she is truthful. Under threat of death, Mike forces Lydia to call Hank using a prepared script, reporting the tracker and asking if it’s part of a law enforcement operation; through Walt’s bugs, the trio hears Hank’s response and learns the tracker was actually placed by a DEA team in Houston, not by Lydia. Though exonerated, Lydia is now useless to them because every barrel in her warehouse is compromised.

Desperate to avoid being killed, Lydia claims she can access an “ocean” of methylamine by stealing from a weekly freight train that carries 24,000 gallons imported from Guangzhou, China, passing through a “dead zone” in New Mexico with no cellular signal and no cameras. Initially skeptical, the trio—motivated by Jesse’s insistence on avoiding murder—develops a plan: stall the train in the dark territory, pump out the methylamine into buried tanks, and replace its weight with water so the heist remains undetected. They recruit new help, including Todd, and set up buried tanks beneath a train trestle along with a stalled truck to block the train.

Meanwhile, Walter White Jr. returns to the White home, refusing to leave until Walt and Skyler explain what’s happening between them; he is eventually sent to live with Hank and Marie, where he grows increasingly angry and frustrated, eventually sneaking back to confront his parents.

The heist unfolds as the team successfully stalls the train, pumps the methylamine, and replaces it with water. Afterward, Walt, Jesse, and Todd celebrate their success, but they are startled to see the dirt-bike boy from the opening scene watching them from behind. The boy waves; Todd waves back, then draws a handgun and shoots the boy dead, leaving Jesse horrified.
