Death Note Episode 14: Friend

Light Yagami introduces Misa Amane to the shinigami Ryuk in his room, then privately discusses with her how to use her Shinigami Eyes to identify and eliminate L while advancing their shared goals. Exploiting Misa's affection for him, Light demands her absolute obedience, threatening to kill her with a Death Note if she disobeys, and instructs her never to mention him, Ryuk, or the Death Note if questioned by authorities.

Misa agrees but conditions her compliance on Light dating her, which he reluctantly accepts after she hands over her Death Note to him. Misa's shinigami, Rem, intervenes, warning Light that she will write his name in her Death Note if he harms Misa in any way, even indirectly, as doing so would cost Rem her own life. Realizing Rem's leverage, Light agrees to protect Misa and meet her regularly, though he internally resents the complication upon learning she is a famous model.

Later, at university, Light flirts briefly with an older student, Kiyomi Takada. Walking home, Misa excitedly glomps Light in public, which visibly annoys him.

A broadcasted audiotape from the Second Kira declares loyalty to the original Kira, denouncing police efforts to portray Kira as a pariah and punishing only criminals Kira has overlooked, without demanding L reveal his face. L analyzes the tape with the task force, concluding the two Kiras have likely met and allied, noting the tape's carelessness in not exploiting L's visibility as an opportunity for the Second Kira to kill him.

This raises L's suspicions of Light, as Light knows L's face but the tape does not reference it; Light denies involvement, arguing it would be illogical for him to act so obviously if guilty. The discussion comparing Light to Kira visibly upsets Soichiro Yagami. In a private moment, L tells Light, "You are not Kira. That is, it will be a problem if you were Kira. Because… I feel you are the first friend that I've ever had," while quietly instructing Mogi to track Light's movements.
