Death Note Episode 2: Confrontation

Season 1· aired 2006-10-11· canon

Light falls into the first of many of L's attempts to uncover him from his Kira alter ego.

Full recap

Light sits in his high school English class, translating a sentence into Japanese. After school, he declines an invitation from classmates to hang out, claiming he has plans.

At home, Light continues writing criminals' names into the Death Note as their faces appear on the news, explaining to Ryuk that he must work efficiently due to his studies and health concerns. His younger sister Sayu interrupts, asking for math homework help; Ryuk warns Light that anyone touching the Death Note would see him too, a fact Light resents learning late. Light then crafts an elaborate hiding spot in his desk drawer: a fake bottom conceals the notebook beneath an ordinary diary, rigged with a mechanism using flammable liquids and a secret lock to ignite and destroy it if opened incorrectly, preferring a house fire over discovery.

Meanwhile, Japanese police, including Matsuda and the chief, convene an urgent Interpol meeting debating whether the criminals' heart attacks are murders. Debate escalates until the chief announces they must involve "L" again, a mysterious figure whose real name and identity are unknown, silencing the room with whispers.

Light notes online support growing for the anonymous killer of criminals. A worldwide ICPO special broadcast interrupts TV: a man in a suit introduces himself as Lind L. Tailor, alias L, revealing his face publicly for the first time. The Japanese task force watches in surprise. Tailor condemns Kira's killings, vows to hunt him down for justice, and declares Kira's actions evil.

Light remains smug until the "evil" remark triggers rage; he writes "Lind L. Tailor" in the Death Note, muttering that opponents of his justice deserve death. Exactly 40 seconds later, Tailor clutches his chest, collapses, and is dragged off-camera as the broadcast cuts to L's insignia.

L's voice returns, revealing the broadcast aired only in the Kanto region of Japan to pinpoint Kira's location, confirming Kira's presence there and his first victim's identity. L vows to execute Kira. Light realizes the trap, accepts the challenge with determination, while Ryuk comments that both must hunt each other without knowing names or faces, and the first revealed will die.
