Death Note Episode 37: New World

The episode opens in a tense standoff inside a warehouse, where Near and his team confront Light Yagami and Teru Mikami as the 40-second countdown from Mikami's Death Note entries expires. Everyone from the Kira Task Force and SPK remains alive, shocking both Light and Mikami, who insists he followed Light's instructions exactly.

Near reveals that his team swapped pages in the real Death Note and created a convincing fake, ensuring Mikami wrote names in the wrong notebook without realizing it; Rester and Gevanni promptly arrest the panicking Mikami.

As Mikami calls Light "God" in desperation, Light's composure cracks—he denies being Kira vehemently at first, but Near's evidence and the task force's dawning realization force a breakdown, leading Light to confess his identity as Kira and proclaim his vision for a new world free of crime.

The task force members react with horror and betrayal; Matsuda, feeling deeply deceived especially over the death of his colleague Soichiro Yagami, snaps in rage and shoots Light multiple times in the chest and arm with a handgun.

Writhing in agony on the floor, a bloodied Light begs a hidden Misa Amane and Kiyomi Takada for help while desperately trying to write names on a piece of the Death Note using his own blood; the task force watches in stunned silence, unable to immediately act.

Light staggers out of the warehouse alone, collapsing on nearby stairs as his wounds worsen; haunted by visions of his pre-Death Note self walking past, he sobs in regret before Ryuk appears, fulfills his earlier promise by writing Light Yagami's name in the Death Note, and watches as Light dies.

Meanwhile, Mikami, losing faith upon seeing Light shot, jams a pen into his own heart in suicide; the task force rushes to aid him but fails to save him.
