Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Episode 4: Final Selection

Tanjiro departs for Mt. Fujikasane to undergo Final Selection, a seven-day survival trial where he must face demons imprisoned on the mountain. Before leaving, Urokodaki reveals he never intended to send Tanjiro to Final Selection, having grown weary of watching children die, and gives him a fox mask with a protection spell.

At the mountain, Tanjiro encounters twin girls in pink kimonos who welcome the candidates and explain the rules: survive seven days among the captive demons, who are contained by wisteria blossoms that border the area. Tanjiro begins his trial with determination, scouting the terrain at night to plan his survival strategy.

During his first encounters, Tanjiro faces multiple demons and successfully applies his training in Breath of Water technique, using the "Opening Thread"—a scent he detects to align his sword strikes perfectly—to defeat them with Fourth Form: Slicing Tide. He cries as he realizes his two years of training under Urokodaki have prepared him well.

As the night progresses, Tanjiro senses an unusually strong stench and discovers a massive, grotesque demon unlike the others—a creature composed of multiple green arms wrapped around itself. This demon has already devoured numerous candidates and grows stronger with each human it consumes. The demon reveals it was captured by Urokodaki 47 years ago and has been imprisoned seeking revenge. It taunts Tanjiro, claiming he will be the fourteenth student of Urokodaki it will devour, having already killed the last two: Sabito and Makomo.

Tanjiro charges at the demon in anger but is thrown back. As he struggles, he hears Sabito's voice encouraging him to breathe better, strengthening his resolve. Tanjiro realizes he cannot allow anyone else to be consumed and attacks with renewed determination. Using his training, he manages to reach the demon's neck and successfully severs it—an achievement that even Sabito could not accomplish before his death.
