Dexter Episode 17: The Dark Defender

Dexter learns that one of the men who killed his mother is still alive, and Lila pushes him to confront the man as a way to find closure. At the same time, a new murder case at a comic book store leads Dexter to notice a poster of a vigilante called the **Dark Defender**, which connects to his own private fantasies about justice.

While having coffee with Debra, Dexter is called away to the crime scene at the comic book shop, where the shopkeeper has been beaten to death with a snow globe. Dexter notices the Dark Defender poster there, and the image leaves an impression on him. Later, at his Narcotics Anonymous meeting, he falls asleep and dreams that he is the Dark Defender, rescuing his mother from danger when he was a child. When he tells his sponsor, Lila, about the dream, she encourages him to face the past directly by finding one of the men involved in his mother’s murder.

Dexter and Lila travel to Naples, Florida, where they locate Santos Jimenez, one of the surviving men from that night, now running a bar. Dexter leaves Lila at the motel and goes to the bar alone, waiting until closing before confronting Jimenez. He does not simply talk to him; the confrontation becomes physical and emotionally intense, and Dexter leaves Jimenez unconscious before returning to the motel shaken and exhausted.

Back in Miami, Dexter visits Rita, where the tension in his personal life continues to build because he is still hiding important parts of himself. He also starts to worry more seriously about protecting his secrets, and later that night he cleans his boat with a black light to look for any traces of blood.

Meanwhile, Debra becomes suspicious of her new boyfriend Gabriel and thinks he may be using her to write a book about her connection to the Ice Truck Killer case. Elsewhere, Frank Lundy continues investigating the Bay Harbor Butcher case and focuses on marina surveillance as part of the larger search.
