Dexter Episode 38: Remains to Be Seen

Dexter wakes up after his car crash with a concussion and a bad case of missing memory, and his immediate problem is that he cannot remember where he hid Benito Gomez’s body. The episode follows him trying to recover that missing piece while also dealing with the Miami police investigation into the latest “Vacation Murders” case and the separate Trinity Killer investigation.

After the crash, Dexter is taken by ambulance, and at the hospital he remembers killing Gomez but not what he did afterward. The doctor wants to keep him for observation, but Dexter leaves with Rita anyway.

Back on the case, a new murder is discovered and Christine is the one who coins the “Vacation Murders” label, which irritates LaGuerta because it gives the crimes a public identity before the police have fully controlled the narrative. At the same time, Dexter is pulled into working the case while trying to keep his own secret from coming apart.

Dexter goes to the yard where his damaged car is being held and checks the trunk, but the remains are not there. He can remember killing Gomez, but not where he put the body, so he searches the boxing arena where the killing happened and tries to piece together his movements from that night.

His memory comes back only in fragments, and he eventually realizes that the blood spot he noticed earlier was a clue: he had put the trash bags inside the boxing bag. He returns to the arena, finds the bags, and disposes of them properly before the evidence can expose him.

Meanwhile, the Trinity Killer is shown stalking a woman, Tarla Grant, and observing her home life. He later approaches her in a seemingly harmless way by helping with groceries after “running into” her again, while quietly continuing his surveillance.

The episode also shows Dexter navigating work tensions, including his interactions with Quinn, who tries to get closer to him, and Dexter’s lack of interest in becoming friendly.

At home, Dexter reflects on how difficult it is to balance his family life with his violent impulses, and Harry appears to him in this internal struggle as he tries to process what his behavior means. The episode ends with Dexter going to sleep and then being awakened by Harrison crying.
