Dexter Episode 43: Slack Tide

Dexter is called away from a quiet family outing when Miami Metro finds a human arm inside an alligator, and the investigation leads to a missing model named Estrella Carazo and the photographer she had most recently worked with, Jonathan Farrow. At the station, the evidence points toward Farrow, and Dexter becomes increasingly convinced that Farrow is the killer after learning the victim’s identity and seeing how closely the case matches the disturbing imagery in Farrow’s work.

Dexter quietly begins gathering evidence on Farrow for himself. He sneaks into Farrow’s studio at night and finds blood and a fingernail linked to the dead model, which confirms for him that the murder likely happened there. Even so, Quinn starts watching Dexter more closely, adding pressure as Dexter tries to keep his movements hidden.

Debra returns to field work after recovering from her injury, but she is also drawn back into digging into Harry’s past. She interviews Valerie Hodges, becomes disillusioned by what she hears, and gives up on continuing that line of inquiry; Dexter later destroys Laura Moser’s file to keep the secrets buried. Debra also moves into Dexter’s apartment, which makes Quinn even more suspicious about Dexter’s personal life and habits.

Dexter’s home life briefly becomes part of the episode’s tension as he tries to balance family and his secret routine. He signs Cody up for a Young Sailors outing after hearing advice about pushing kids into activities, but the trip becomes another obstacle when Dexter has to accompany him. Meanwhile, Dexter continues spending time with Arthur Mitchell, including helping him with a tree-cutting task and later getting pulled into Arthur’s orbit in ways that keep the two men casually connected.

Unable to let go of Farrow, Dexter breaks away at night while everyone is asleep, goes to Farrow’s house, sedates him, and brings him to his kill table. Farrow insists he did not actually kill the models and claims he was simply photographing brutality as art, but Dexter ignores him and kills him anyway.

The next day, Dexter is stunned when he learns that Farrow’s assistant has been arrested. Angel explains that the assistant was the real killer and that the police have footage and DNA connecting him to the murders. Dexter realizes he has killed an innocent man, and the episode ends with him shaken by the fact that he violated Harry’s code.
