Game of Thrones Episode 37: Mockingbird

Tyrion is left scrambling for a champion to defend him in the coming trial by combat. Jaime visits him in his cell, but refuses to fight because his sword hand is still useless, and Bronn also turns him down after accepting a better offer from Cersei. Tyrion finally gets an unexpected volunteer: Oberyn Martell, who offers to fight in his place.

At the same time, Cersei names Gregor Clegane as the crown’s champion against Tyrion, making the trial even more dangerous. Tyrion’s prospects look bleak until Oberyn steps forward with an apparent personal reason for wanting the fight.

On Dragonstone, Melisandre and Selyse speak, with Melisandre’s influence over the Baratheon household still firmly in place. Meanwhile, at Castle Black, Jon Snow returns with the Night’s Watch after the mission to Craster’s Keep, but his warning about reinforcing the Wall is dismissed by the men in command.

Brienne of Tarth and Podrick Payne stop at an inn and meet Hot Pie, who tells them Arya is alive and has been traveling west. Using that information, Brienne decides they should head toward the Vale, since Lysa Arryn is the nearest wealthy relative they can think of who might shelter Arya.

Arya and Sandor Clegane are ambushed on the road by two men from the traveling group they had previously encountered. The fight turns bloody: Sandor kills one attacker after being wounded, and Arya kills the other herself.

In Meereen, Daenerys orders Daario to take action against Yunkai, but their conversation turns personal when they sleep together. Even so, Daenerys continues to focus on ruling and on forcing the cities she has conquered to accept her authority.

At the Eyrie, Sansa is seen with Petyr Baelish and Lysa Arryn, and Lysa reacts with jealousy after seeing Petyr kiss Sansa. Lysa threatens to throw Sansa through the Moon Door, but Petyr intervenes, confesses that he truly loved Catelyn Stark rather than Lysa, and pushes Lysa to her death through the Moon Door.
