Game of Thrones Episode 62: Stormborn

Daenerys begins the episode at Dragonstone as a storm rages, and her war council argues over how to take Westeros. Tyrion urges caution and a siege, while Yara Greyjoy, Ellaria Sand, and Olenna Tyrell want a fast strike on King’s Landing; Daenerys ultimately sides with Tyrion and assigns the Unsullied to take Casterly Rock while her allies move against the capital by land and sea.

At Winterfell, Jon Snow receives a message from Samwell Tarly at Oldtown saying that there is dragonglass at Dragonstone, which could help in the coming war against the White Walkers. Jon decides to go meet Daenerys and ask for the dragonglass despite strong objections from Sansa Stark, Davos Seaworth, and several northern lords; before leaving, he names Sansa as his regent at Winterfell and warns Littlefinger to stay away from her.

In King’s Landing, Cersei gathers her bannermen and tries to hold her position by stressing the threat Daenerys poses and the need for loyalty.

Arya Stark reaches Winterfell and reconnects with Hot Pie, who tells her that Jon is now King in the North. Hearing that her family is back in the North, she changes her plans and heads toward Winterfell instead of continuing south.

At Oldtown, Sam is struggling with his duties at the Citadel and with Jorah Mormont, whose greyscale has worsened. Sam secretly decides to try an unapproved treatment and cuts away the infected flesh from Jorah’s arm while the maesters are away, risking both his career and his life.

On the Narrow Sea, Yara Greyjoy and Theon lead the fleet carrying the Sand Snakes and their forces toward Dorne, but they are ambushed by Euron Greyjoy’s Iron Fleet. Euron’s ships overwhelm them, kill Obara and Nymeria Sand, and take Ellaria Sand and Tyene Sand captive; Yara is also seized, while Theon panics and jumps into the water to escape.

Back on Dragonstone, Melisandre visits Daenerys and encourages her to think about the importance of allies, setting in motion Daenerys’s decision to seek Jon Snow’s support.
