Game of Thrones Episode 9: Baelor

Ned Stark is brought before the court in King’s Landing and is given one last chance to save himself by confessing to treason, but the “mercy” offered to him is quickly broken when Joffrey orders his execution anyway.

In the Red Keep, Varys visits Ned in the black cells and urges him to accept the deal, explaining that a public confession could spare the realm further bloodshed and might protect Ned’s daughters; Ned refuses at first, but the danger to Sansa weighs heavily on him. Later, Ned is taken before Joffrey, Cersei, Sansa, the court, and the crowd at Baelor’s Sept, where he publicly confesses to false treason and swears loyalty to Joffrey. Sansa hopes this will end safely, but Joffrey immediately changes course and demands Ned’s death, despite Cersei’s attempts to stop him. In the square, Ned is executed by Ilyn Payne with his own sword, Ice, while Arya, hidden in the crowd, is pulled away by Yoren.

Catelyn and Robb Stark deal with the growing war on two fronts. Robb’s army reaches the Twins, where Lord Walder Frey controls the crossing, and Catelyn negotiates a hard bargain to secure passage for the northern forces. Frey agrees to let Robb cross and to provide men, but only if Robb accepts a marriage alliance with House Frey; Robb reluctantly agrees because he needs the crossing and hopes to free his father. Afterward, Robb leads his men into battle against the Lannisters, wins a major victory, and captures Jaime Lannister. By the end of the episode, word of Ned’s fate reaches the camp, and the northern lords declare Robb the King in the North.

At the Wall, Jon Snow receives a reward from Commander Jeor Mormont for saving his life: Longclaw, a Valyrian steel sword with the Mormont sigil altered to remove the bear’s head. Jon is pleased and conflicted, still torn between his vows and the life he imagined beyond the Wall, but he remains with the Night’s Watch. He also learns more about Maester Aemon, deepening the sense of mystery around the old man’s past.

Across the Narrow Sea, Daenerys struggles to keep Khal Drogo alive after his wound worsens and fever sets in. The Dothraki grow uneasy as his condition deteriorates, and Daenerys turns to Mirri Maz Duur, a captive healer, despite the suspicion and anger of those around her. Mirri performs a blood ritual in a desperate attempt to save Drogo, but the ceremony goes badly wrong, leaving the situation more frightening and uncertain than before.

Tyrion Lannister learns that his father has placed him in danger by sending him to the front lines with the mountain clans, but Tyrion survives the immediate fighting and is left in a grim position within Tywin’s war plans. Tywin prepares his forces for the coming conflict, while the episode closes with the realm fractured by Ned’s death, Robb’s victory, and the widening war.
