Six years later. With the Driftmark succession suddenly critical, Rhaenyra attempts to strike a bargain with Rhaenys.
Full recap
Six years after Laena Velaryon's funeral, Princess Rhaenys Targaryen attends a council on Driftmark where Maester Kelvyn reports that her husband, Lord Corlys Velaryon, has been gravely wounded in an ambush by Triarchy forces in the Stepstones, raising questions about Driftmark's succession. Corlys's brother, Vaemond Velaryon, petitions to become the next Lord of the Tides, rejecting Rhaenyra's second son Lucerys as heir due to doubts over his Velaryon blood, and travels to King's Landing with Rhaenys in hopes of her support.
On Dragonstone, Rhaenyra reads a letter from Baela Targaryen warning of Vaemond's petition and dismisses her sons Jacaerys and Joffrey before discussing it with Daemon, who agrees they must go to King's Landing to protect Lucerys's claim, fearing Alicent and Otto Hightower will back Vaemond to undermine Rhaenyra's own succession. In the Red Keep, Otto Hightower's small council debates the succession: Lord Jasper Wylde notes Corlys never formally named Lucerys heir, while Ser Tyland Lannister argues Lucerys lacks naval experience; Alicent supports hearing the petitions.
Alicent learns from a servant that her son Aegon raped her; she pays the girl off, provides her moon tea to prevent pregnancy, and sternly confronts Aegon, who shows little remorse. Rhaenyra and Daemon arrive at Viserys's bedside, finding him bedridden and decayed, but he struggles to convene the court despite Otto's reluctance.
At the throne room petition, Rhaenyra argues Lucerys's claim per Corlys's wishes; Vaemond counters that Rhaenyra's sons are bastards unworthy of Driftmark. Viserys, summoning his strength, enters dramatically, reaffirms Rhaenyra as his heir, and rules Lucerys as Driftmark's heir after Rhaenys speaks in favor following a private talk with Rhaenyra by a weirwood tree. Enraged, Vaemond calls Rhaenyra a whore and her sons bastards; Viserys threatens to remove his tongue, but Daemon swiftly decapitates Vaemond with a sword, quipping "He can keep his tongue."
That evening, Viserys, heavily medicated and frail, joins a tense family dinner in the Red Keep with Rhaenyra's family, Alicent's children, and others. He toasts Rhaenyra as his named heir and urges unity, praising Alicent's devotion and imploring Rhaenyra and Alicent to reconcile for the family's sake, moving them both emotionally. Misinterpreting his references to Aegon as the "one to carry forward" the conqueror's legacy, Alicent gains resolve. Viserys returns to his chambers, removes his Valyrian steel crown, bids farewell to Grand Maester Orwyle, and dies alone.
