Hunter x Hunter Episode 2: Test x of x Tests

Gon, Leorio, and Kurapika arrive at Dolle Harbor after passing the captain's test and head toward a massive cedar tree on a hill as directed. In a foggy, abandoned town, an old woman blocks their path with a quiz: participants must choose between saving only one person in a hypothetical scenario, or face disqualification for refusing or giving any other answer.

A mysterious man takes the quiz first, selecting his mother over his lover since "a mother can't be replaced, but a lover can," and passes. The woman then asks the trio to choose between saving a son or a daughter; frustrated, Leorio lunges at her, but Kurapika blocks him and realizes the correct response is silence, as there's no right answer to such a question.

Staying silent, they pass and continue into thick fog, where they encounter a injured man and a young woman called a Kiriko who claims to be his wife; she begs them to chase down the fox that stole their luggage while she tends to him. Leorio treats the man's wounds with medical skill, Kurapika deduces the pair aren't actually a couple based on subtle clues like the woman's dialect, and Gon pursues multiple Kiriko-like foxes through the forest.

Gon notices the Kiriko he's chasing differs slightly from the earlier one, catches it off guard, and forces it to reveal that the Kirikos are shape-shifting navigators testing their perception and worthiness. Impressed by Gon's sharp senses, Kurapika's insight, and Leorio's care, the Kirikos approve them all and fly the group to the next exam site.
