My Hero Academia Episode 33: Listen Up!! A Tale from the Past

Season 2· canon

The students return to their daily lives while All Might has a special history lesson for Izuku. It’s time to learn about One For All!

Full recap

As the week of workplace training concludes, Izuku bids farewell to Gran Torino, thanking him for helping him gain more control over his Quirk. Gran Torino reminds Izuku to stay within his 5% limit and that he still has much to learn. Izuku asks why Gran Torino isn't famous despite his strength and having trained the number one hero. The old man reveals he never wanted to be a Pro Hero and only became certified to use his Quirk freely at a certain point in his past, adding that All Might will explain the rest. As Izuku leaves, Gran Torino seemingly becomes senile and asks Izuku his name. Izuku, understanding the deeper meaning, replies "Deku," pleasing Gran Torino, who waves him off.

Back at U.A. High School, Class 1-A students discuss their internships. Eijiro and Hanta tease Katsuki about his new hairstyle. Mina commends Tsuyu and Kyoka for confronting real villains. Ochaco describes her internship as fruitful, demonstrating fighting poses. Denki comments on Ochaco's change, but Minoru claims all women are evil after his internship. Denki then points out that Izuku, Shoto, and Tenya went through the most. When asked what happened, Shoto states that Endeavor saved them from the Hero Killer, rather than the full truth.

Mashirao expresses fear of what might have happened if the Hero Killer had come to the U.S.J., and Denki finds the Hero Killer's personality "kind of cool." Izuku scolds Denki, who apologizes. Tenya admits the Hero Killer could be seen as "kind of cool" but criticizes him for killing for his own ends. Inspired, Tenya loudly asks the class to take their seats, annoying his classmates but impressing Izuku, who sees his return to a heroic path.

In Hero Basic Training, All Might announces a rescue training race through Field Gamma, a metal labyrinth. Students will be in five four-person groups, racing one group at a time to a distress signal. The first group consists of Izuku, Tenya, Mina, Hanta, and Mashirao. Their peers initially doubt Izuku's chances due to his Quirk's drawbacks and lack of mobility.

When the race begins, Hanta takes an early lead but is quickly surpassed by Izuku. Using Full Cowl at 5%, Izuku swiftly maneuvers through the terrain by jumping, leaving his classmates behind. He recalls his training, believing it will help him win. All Might and the other students are shocked and amazed by Izuku's improved skills and Quirk control. Shoto and Ochaco notice Izuku's movements are similar to Katsuki's, which irritates Katsuki, who realizes Izuku was getting stronger during his training.

As Izuku races ahead, focusing on controlling his Quirk at 5%, he abruptly loses his footing and falls. Hanta wins the race, and an injured Izuku comes in last. All Might commends the group's improvements and reminds them about the end-of-term test. He then secretly tells Izuku he's impressed with his improvement and gives him a thumbs up, asking him to meet after class to discuss One For All.

After Hero Basic Training, Class 1-A changes in the locker rooms. In the boys' locker room, Minoru excitedly tells Izuku he found a hole to peep into the girls' locker room. Tenya reprimands him, but Minoru looks anyway, only to have his eye poked by Kyoka's earphone plug. In the girls' locker room, Momo, Toru, and Mina are annoyed by Minoru's antics and thank Kyoka. Kyoka feels dejected, noticing she was the only girl Minoru didn't mention in his rant.

Later, Izuku meets All Might, who apologizes for not being present during the Hosu City incident. Izuku asks All Might to explain what he meant earlier about One For All. All Might confirms that even though the Hero Killer got his blood, he cannot obtain One For All unless Izuku wishes it, as it cannot be forcibly stolen, though it can be forcibly passed on. All Might explains One For All's origin, stating it's a special Quirk derived from one that existed since the beginning of Quirks.

He recounts a time of chaos when Quirks first appeared. A man with the ability to steal Quirks rose to power, taking over Japan. Izuku questions if this is a fabrication and its relevance to One For All. All Might explains that this ruler could also give out Quirks, but often left recipients in a catatonic state if they couldn't handle the power, similar to certain creatures.

The man and his Quirk are named All For One. All For One gave his younger brother a Quirk that could accumulate power, as the brother was thought to be Quirkless and resented his evil deeds. The brother, however, secretly had a Quirk that allowed him to pass on his Quirk to others. This Quirk, combined with the power-stockpiling Quirk given by All For One, created One For All.

All Might notes the irony of justice being born from evil. Izuku understands the origin but questions why a villain from so long ago is relevant. All Might believes the man stole a Quirk granting him immortality and that his brother was never able to defeat him. Instead, the brother passed the power down through generations, who cultivated it until All Might finally wielded it and defeated the man. All Might believes this man is now the leader of the League of Villains and that Izuku will likely face him one day. Izuku promises to do his best with All Might by his side. All Might, unable to tell Izuku he may not be by his side when that time comes, simply thanks him.

The next day, in homeroom, Shota announces a summer forest lodge trip but warns that any student failing the end-of-term test will be stuck in remedial school.

Elsewhere, a man expresses surprise at the Hero Killer's capture but is pleased things are proceeding as he foresaw. He states that Tomura's role is to supervise and unify new villains joining the League of Villains. The man's doctor expresses doubt about Tomura's capabilities, suggesting faster progress if the man intervened. The man asks the doctor to patch him up faster. He reveals himself to be Tomura's teacher, stating he will let Tomura do the hard work to become his successor, as Tomura was born for it. The teacher tells All Might to enjoy the "transient" peace while he can.
