One-Punch Man Episode 1: The Strongest Man
Saitama is a guy who’s a hero for fun. After saving a child from certain death, he decided to become a hero and trained hard for three years. Though he’s now so strong he can defeat any opponent with a single punch, lately he feels as if, in exchange for overwhelming power, he’s lost something even more important.
Full recap
The episode opens in a city on an ordinary day, shattered by a massive explosion from a purple, tentacled monster named **Vaccine Man**, who rampages through the streets, declaring humanity a pollutant on Earth and easily defeating arriving heroes. He spots a crying young girl amid the ruins and enlarges his hand to crush her, but a bald man in a yellow jumpsuit and red gloves—**Saitama**, who calls himself a hero for fun—leaps in at the last moment, saving her effortlessly.
Vaccine Man mocks Saitama's motives and transforms into a towering giant, launching a devastating energy blast, but Saitama defeats him with a single punch, sending the monster flying into the sky where he explodes. Frustrated by the quick victory, Saitama walks away yelling in boredom as crowds cheer from afar.
The story flashes back three years to Saitama as a young man with hair, working a dull job and reading about a crab-based monster named **Crabante** (who transformed after eating too much crab) terrorizing people while searching for a boy who humiliated him. Saitama encounters a boy with an oversized chin who admits drawing nipples on Crabante's chest with a marker while the monster slept in a park. Crabante arrives, threatening the boy and crushing his soccer ball; Saitama intervenes, ripping out one of Crabante's eyes and defeating him with a punch after the monster grows larger and mocks Saitama's head.
In the present, Saitama shops for discounted goods, reflecting on his intense three-year training regimen of 100 push-ups, sit-ups, squats, and a 10km run daily—which caused him to go bald and become overwhelmingly powerful, leaving him bored with no real challenges or worthy opponents.
That night, Saitama one-punches a car-obsessed monster who insults his baldness. The next morning, a **Subterranean** crashes through his apartment wall, destroying his home; outside, more underground creatures led by a larger Subterranean King invade the surface city, claiming humanity's overpopulation drove them up after destroying 70% of the world. Saitama, in pajamas, fights through hordes of them effortlessly, pummeling many as the episode ends with him facing the king.
