Full recap

Michael Scofield deliberately gets himself sent to **Fox River State Penitentiary** so he can break out his brother, Lincoln Burrows, before Lincoln’s execution. In this episode, Michael’s plan is set in motion, and the key relationships, threats, and prison dynamics that will matter later are introduced.

Michael prepares for the plan by covering his body with an elaborate tattoo that hides important prison blueprints and other information he will need inside. He also clears out his apartment and destroys materials connected to his preparations, then commits a bank robbery so he can be arrested and sent to prison.

At trial, Michael does not seriously defend himself, and he is sentenced to Fox River. Once inside, he is placed in the same prison where Lincoln is held on death row, and he begins observing the inmates and staff around him.

Michael meets his cellmate Fernando Sucre and starts building a relationship with him. He also crosses paths with several important figures inside the prison, including prison doctor Dr. Sara Tancredi, mob-connected inmate John Abruzzi, and Warden Henry Pope.

Michael visits Lincoln on death row and reveals that he is not there by accident: he tells Lincoln that he intends to break them both out. Lincoln, who is facing execution for a murder he says he did not commit, is shocked but listens as Michael makes clear that the escape plan has already begun.

Outside the prison, attorney Veronica Donovan continues looking into Lincoln’s case and tries to help from the legal side. The episode also shows that Lincoln’s son LJ is dealing with problems of his own, while federal scrutiny around the case hints that Lincoln’s conviction may be tied to something larger than it first appears.

The episode ends with the prison break scheme underway and Michael beginning to position himself for the complicated work ahead.
