Reacher Episode 9: ATM

A man falls to his death from a helicopter in the Catskill Mountains, and the episode then shifts to Jack Reacher in Arkansas, where a routine ATM stop turns into a violent rescue and an urgent warning about his old unit.

- In the opening scene, a man is shown falling out of a helicopter to his death in the Catskills. - Two years, seven months, and 19 days after the events in Margrave, Reacher is in Murfreesboro, Arkansas, buying clothes in a thrift store. - At the store, he realizes he does not have enough cash, so he goes across the street to an ATM. - While there, he notices a battered and bloodied woman making a withdrawal and sees a parked car nearby, which leads him to realize she is being threatened and that her son is being held captive by an armed burglar. - Reacher intervenes, knocks the thief unconscious, and saves the boy. - He tells the woman to call the police, then returns to the ATM and withdraws money for himself. - On the receipt, he notices two deposits that form a coded message: \( \$1.10 \) and \( \$1030.00 \), which together signal the 110th Special Investigations Unit and the standard distress call “10-30.” - Reacher borrows the thrift store employee’s phone and calls Frances Neagley. - Neagley tells him that Calvin Franz’s body has been found in the Catskill Mountains and that it appears he was thrown from an airplane. - The episode establishes that Franz was part of Reacher’s former Special Investigations Unit, and Reacher understands that something serious has happened to one of their own.
