Spartacus Episode 13: Kill Them All

Spartacus spends the episode trying to turn the other gladiators and slaves against Batiatus, while Batiatus prepares a public celebration that includes a fight to the death between Spartacus and Crixus. The episode ends with the rebellion exploding inside the ludus and villa as the slaves and gladiators attack the Romans and Batiatus’s household collapses into chaos.

At the start, Spartacus trains with Rhaskos and tries to convince him to join the rebellion, but Rhaskos says many of the gladiators still see Crixus as the true champion and follow him instead. Spartacus then asks to work on the palus, and the guards allow it. There he speaks with Duro and Agron, who tell him that Hamilcar is with them, but most of the gladiators still stand with Crixus. Spartacus realizes he needs Crixus’s support if the revolt is to succeed.

Batiatus and Lucretia host a lavish party in honor of their new standing, with nobles and guests gathering at the villa while tensions build inside the ludus. Batiatus plans to use the occasion to showcase a fight between Spartacus and Crixus, pushing the two men into a deadly public contest. At the same time, Spartacus continues to prepare the uprising, relying on Mira to help open the gate at the right moment. Lucretia also manipulates Ilithyia, forcing her into a role at the party, while Ilithyia is left resentful and looking for her own opportunity.

Spartacus and Crixus are brought to their fight, and the contest becomes the turning point of the episode. As the battle unfolds, Spartacus tries to reach Crixus and make him understand that he does not want to win by killing him. Crixus initially fights hard, but the two eventually come to an agreement before the match is decided: Spartacus wants Batiatus dead, and Crixus wants Naevia rescued. Crixus then commits to Spartacus’s cause.

While the duel is underway, Mira carries out her part of the plan. She reaches the gate, kills a guard, takes his keys, and opens the route between the ludus and the villa. Once the fighting opens up, the other gladiators and slaves surge into action and begin attacking the Romans. Spartacus uses Crixus’s shield to vault upward toward the balcony, nearly reaching Batiatus in the process. The revolt spreads quickly as the slaves storm through the opened gate and the villa begins to fall under their control.

In the chaos, Crixus turns to the others and shouts, “Kill them all,” unleashing the full rebellion. The gladiators and slaves rampage through the villa, killing guards and Romans and leaving the household in disarray. Ilithyia, rather than saving the people trapped inside, has the Roman soldiers leave and order the villa’s doors sealed, trapping everyone in with the uprising. Spartacus then gathers the surviving gladiators and slaves and speaks to them as the rebellion takes hold, and they answer him with their full support.
