Full recap
The 104th cadets face investigation after the deaths of two captured Titans, then must choose which military division to join as the Survey Corps reveals plans to reclaim Wall Maria and explore Eren's basement for answers about the Titan threat.
## Investigation and Aftermath
Following the unauthorized killing of the test subject Titans Sawney and Beane, soldiers are investigated for misuse of omni-directional mobility gear. The cadets' 3D gear is examined and their whereabouts verified by the Military Police. Some soldiers express frustration that they're being punished for killing Titans, while others note the test subjects were valuable for research. The cadets—including Armin, Sasha, Connie, and Annie—discuss speculation about who killed the Titans and debate which military branch to join.
## The Survey Corps Recruitment
Commander Erwin Smith arrives in Trost District to recruit soldiers for the Survey Corps, stating that Eren has proven himself a benefit to humanity. Erwin reveals that answers to the Titan mystery lie in Eren's basement in Shiganshina District. He informs recruits that in the last four years, 60% of Survey Corps soldiers have died while establishing a route to reclaim Wall Maria. Despite these grim statistics, Erwin asks if anyone is willing to sacrifice themselves to join his division.
## Recruitment Decisions
As soldiers leave to join other branches, many cadets struggle with their decision. Annie subtly tries to convince others to join the Military Police instead to protect them. However, several cadets ultimately choose the Survey Corps: Armin, Mikasa, Connie, Sasha, Krista, Ymir, Bertholdt, Reiner, and Jean remain. Jean's decision is particularly significant—after witnessing Marco's death during the battle, he decides to honor his memory by joining despite his fear.
## Evening Confrontation
That night, Jean approaches Eren and asks if it's true that Eren attacked Mikasa in Titan form. Eren admits it happened but reveals he has no memory of his actions. Jean states that Eren must offer them something in return for their lives, expressing concern for his companions' well-being. The cadets don the Survey Corps' green jackets with the organization's emblem.
## Final Preparations
The episode concludes with a montage of the new recruits training in formation for the upcoming operation. Commander Erwin then launches the 57th Expedition Squad to begin the mission to reclaim Wall Maria.
