Attack on Titan Episode 84: Night of the End

The night before, Hange interrupts Jean's thoughts of a peaceful life to call him to a meeting. Jean meets Hange and Mikasa, who updates him on Levi's condition and their new alliance with some individuals from Marley. Hange plans to stop Eren's genocide, but they need more allies.

Mikasa immediately agrees, but Jean is concerned about the aftermath, believing that even if they stop Eren, the world will still hate Eldians, and Eren only has four years left with the Founding Titan. He points out that they have failed to find a peaceful solution for years, which is why Eren is taking this path.

Hange acknowledges the difficulty of buying time against the rest of the world but refuses to accept genocide. They admit their own shortcomings might have influenced Eren's path, but as commander of the Scout Regiment, Hange feels responsible for upholding the dream of their fallen comrades, many of whom never learned the truth of their world. Hange believes the fallen Scouts would not have supported the idea of trampling the rest of the world for the island's freedom. Remembering Marco's death, Jean agrees to follow them, acknowledging his identity as a Scout.

In the present, the mixed group of Scouts and members of the Marleyan military gather around a campfire. Theo Magath questions why the Scouts would stop Eren, whose success would create their ideal world. Hange reiterates their opposition to genocide. Magath interprets this as them finally finding a sense of justice, which provokes Jean. Jean demands to know if they are devils for trying to avoid being devoured by the Titans Marley left on Paradis Island. Magath counters that the rumbling, which people feared, has now come true, endangering the world.

The two argue about historical justifications until Hange interrupts, stating it's pointless to discuss a past none of them witnessed. Hange explains to Magath that the Scouts lived in the outside world for a few months and can no longer be ignorant island devils.

Changing the subject, Annie asks the Scouts if they are capable of killing Eren. Mikasa and Armin insist they would talk with Eren first, but Annie presses for an answer if diplomacy fails. Annie believes that if Marley then moves to kill Eren, the Scouts will defend him, leading to a fight between the two groups. She accuses Mikasa of prioritizing Eren above all else.

This provokes Mikasa into a combative stance, and Annie readies her ring blade. Annie tells Mikasa she understands her feelings, as Annie's only reason to stop Eren is to save her father in Marley. Annie states that if Mikasa and the others can change Eren's mind, she would be content, and asks them not to fight each other until they have a chance to try. Mikasa agrees.

As the group eats, Hange explains that it will take five hours by horseback to reach the port where Kiyomi Azumabito has a flying boat intended for observing the rumbling. They plan to use it to get close to the Founding Titan, but they need to determine Eren's destination to avoid running out of fuel.

Though questioned, Yelena insists she doesn't know where Eren would go. When Conny suggests she might want to help the homeland she was trying to free from Marley, Magath and Pieck reveal that Yelena is actually a disillusioned Marleyan who fabricated a story about saving the world with the man she believed in after meeting Zeke.

Yelena doesn't deny it and asks if there are any sweeter words than saving the world. She reminds Reiner of breaking through Wall Maria, causing countless Eldian deaths in pursuit of saving the world. She then mentions Annie killing many Scout Regiment members and Armin's transformation into the Colossal Titan in Liberio, which killed both military and civilians.

After Yelena lists numerous crimes from both sides, Jean exhales in satisfaction and asks Hange for more stew. He thanks Yelena for bringing everything into the open so they can sort through their differences. Undeterred, Yelena brings up Marco and Annie's involvement in his death, suggesting Jean might want to ask for the truth.

Annie begins to say she took Marco's omni-directional mobility gear, but Reiner interrupts, stating she did it on his orders. He explains that Marco overheard him and Bertholdt, and Reiner figured the best way to prevent Marco from spreading what he learned was to have him eaten by a Titan. Numb, Jean asks if Marco had any last words, and Reiner replies that Marco said they hadn't talked things through.

Jean understands, realizing that the lack of communication has caused their prolonged conflict. Hange states they are making progress because they are talking now.

Reiner explains his conflicted feelings and how he ended up killing the Titan that was eating Marco, but Jean doesn't want to hear about Reiner's guilt. Reiner insists what he did was unforgivable and apologizes. Agitated, Jean punches Reiner to the ground and begins beating him until Conny and Armin pull him off.

Jean kicks Reiner twice, but hits Gabi instead when she tries to protect Reiner from the second kick. Gabi apologizes on Reiner's behalf, emphasizing their hope that the island's destruction would lead to the world forgiving them. She begs the Scouts for help, wanting to save her family still in Liberio. Falco joins her plea, and Jean calms enough to ask the others to let him go. He walks off without explanation, and Gabi despairs that her hopes have been ignored.

In the morning, Jean rouses Gabi, who is surprised he returned. He tells her he will help, then rouses Reiner, saying the man should have healed. The group sets off by wagon for the port. On the way, Jean apologizes to Gabi for kicking her, but tells Reiner he will not apologize to him for what he did. Reiner accepts this.

The wagons are then stopped by the arrival of the Cart Titan. Pieck has scouted the port and reports it is under the control of the Jaegerists. They must have gone ahead using the steam engine and are prepared for battle with soldiers equipped with anti-Titan gear. Inside the harbor, Floch stands behind a captive Kiyomi with a pistol.
