Attack on Titan Episode 86: Retrospective

Armin watches Daz's body sink into the sea after Conny shoots him. Conny struggles with having killed Samuel as well, while the battle between the Jaegerists and the Female and Armored Titans rages throughout the port.

From their shelter, Hange learns from an Azumabito mechanic that preparing the flying boat normally takes a full day. With the right equipment, they could reduce it to half a day, but Hange notes that in half a day, the Wall Titans could cover 600 kilometers from the coast, which would doom Liberio. Theo Magath adds that even if they get the flying boat airborne, they still need to find Eren, which will take more time.

Kiyomi Azumabito suggests going to the coastal city of Odiha in Marley, where her family owns a hangar. They could leave the port immediately, towing the flying boat to Odiha, and service it there. Kiyomi believes they can arrive before the rumbling but cannot guarantee it will last more than half a day. Magath agrees, as it's otherwise impossible to use the flying boat, and urges the engineers to prepare their ship in fifteen minutes for the sake of their country and the world. Hange then informs Mikasa of the plans, and Jean goes to retrieve their group waiting outside the port.

Mikasa notifies Annie and Reiner of the plan change and tells them to protect the Azumabitos. Floch spots Kiyomi and the mechanics heading to the ship and tries to have them killed, but Mikasa and Hange stop him. Annie and Reiner use their Titans to block the Jaegerists' attempts to kill the Azumabitos. After the Female Titan loses an arm, Reiner takes multiple Thunder Spears to the face to protect her. Floch realizes the group intends to service the flying boat on the mainland and urges the Jaegerists to sink the Azumabito ship.

Away from the fighting, Yelena, Onyankopon, Levi, Gabi, and Falco are assembled on Pieck's Cart Titan. Seeing the two Titans struggle, Falco suggests fighting with his new power as the Jaw Titan. Pieck tells him it's a bad idea, as the first transformation never goes well, and says she will join the battle after getting everyone to the ship.

Falco is disappointed and wishes Porco was there. He jumps off Pieck's back and runs towards the battle. Gabi calls after him, but Pieck tips her out of sight with her Titan's head, telling her she needs to get them to the ship.

Magath urges the mechanics aboard and sees Conny helping an injured Armin. Conny leaves Armin with Magath and draws his blades to defend the ship. Pieck arrives with her passengers and informs Magath about Falco.

As Onyankopon and the mechanics shovel coal to start the ship, Hange spots a train with Jaegerist reinforcements heading towards the port. It is bombed before it can pull in, shocking everyone. Floch is stunned but tells his soldiers to keep fighting.

Elsewhere, Jean finds Falco scraping his bloody hand with a nail, attempting to transform. Jean tells Falco to get on the ship, and Falco initially agrees, but then sees the Female and Armored Titans being subdued by Thunder Spears. Jean leaves to join Conny and Mikasa in defending them, and Pieck joins the fight. Falco then charges into the chaos and transforms into the Jaw Titan.

The Jaegerists break ranks, and the Scouts realize this is their chance to head for the ship. Floch barrels through the Scouts, past both the Jaw and Cart Titans, to aim a Thunder Spear at the Azumabito ship. Just before he pulls the trigger, Gabi shoots him from the ship's deck, sending his spear off target into the water. Floch himself falls into the water and sinks.

The tide of battle turns against the Jaegerists, and the ship's horn sounds as Onyankopon shouts they are ready to leave. Falco, however, is out of control, even with no enemies left. He attacks Pieck, pinning her Cart Titan. Understanding what is happening, Magath runs over with a blade and calls for Pieck to hold Falco still. While she does, Magath precisely cuts open the Jaw Titan's nape and pulls Falco out, subduing the Titan.

With the battle over, the group heads for the ship, former enemies leaning on each other. Magath hands an unconscious Falco to Onyankopon and tells him to leave immediately, stating he will stay behind to hold the rear.

As the ship leaves, Magath runs through the port, eyeing a captured Marleyan cruiser. Surviving Jaegerists spot him and open fire, but Keith Sadies cuts them down. Keith reveals he took out the reinforcement train. When Keith asks why Magath is still there, Magath explains he wants to destroy the cruiser to prevent pursuit. Keith agrees to help.

The two make it into the ship's belly, where Magath prepares to light the gunpowder. He suggests this is Keith's last chance to leave. Keith, guarding the door, declines, saying he has been looking for a good time to die. The two men talk about the young people in their charge and how they inspired them. Magath refuses to take credit given what he put the others through, but Keith thinks the children would be proud of him.

The Jaegerists find them and begin pounding on the door. Magath thanks Keith, and the two men exchange names. Magath then ignites the gunpowder. The Marleyan cruiser explodes and begins to sink, killing them and all the Jaegerists onboard.

On the departing ship, those on deck observe the explosion and are saddened by Magath's sacrifice. Inside, Hange informs Annie and Reiner that their journey is to Odiha, not Liberio, which they cannot save in time. Annie collapses, saying her reason for fighting is gone and she wants to leave the ship. Hange tries to mitigate this, telling Annie that Magath understood this but still gave his life so they could continue and save others. Dispirited, Annie asks Mikasa again if she could kill Eren, or if she would watch if Annie tried. Mikasa is silent, and Annie admits she is tired of the violence and does not want to keep fighting Mikasa and the other Scouts, or even Eren.
