Breaking Bad Episode 47: Live Free or Die

Season 5· aired 2012-07-15

As Walt deals with the aftermath of the Casa Tranquila explosion, Hank works to wrap up his investigation of Gus' empire.

Full recap

The episode opens with a **flashforward** to a disheveled **Walter White** with regrown hair and a beard, celebrating his **52nd birthday** alone at an **Albuquerque Denny's** using a false name and claiming to be from **New Hampshire**; he secretly meets an arms dealer in the restroom to illegally purchase an **M60 machine gun** hidden in a car trunk.

Returning to the **present timeline** immediately after the bombing that killed **Gus Fring**, Walt returns to his home to **dispose of all evidence** connecting him to the crime, including the bomb-making equipment and the **Lily of the Valley plant** he used to poison **Brock Cantillo**. When Walt arrives, **Skyler White** refuses to speak to him, explicitly stating that she is now **scared of him** because she knows he orchestrated the bombing. Walt eventually relaxes but suddenly remembers the **surveillance cameras** Gus installed in the **superlab**, realizing the footage could **incriminate him**; simultaneously, **Hank Schrader** visits the destroyed lab and also notices the cameras, suspecting a video feed existed.

The next day, **Mike Ehrmantraut**, still recovering from gunshot wounds in Mexico, learns of Gus's death and drives back to **New Mexico**. He intercepts **Walt** and **Jesse Pinkman** on the road, pointing his gun at Walt with intent to **kill him**. Walt and Jesse convince Mike that they must work together to deal with **Gus's laptop**, which Gus used as the monitor for the cameras and which has been seized by police as **evidence**. Mike advises everyone to **leave the city** immediately, warning that police will find them in the footage. After Walt and Mike argue over the best course of action, **Jesse suggests** using a massive **industrial electromagnet** to destroy the laptop and the evidence from outside the police building.

Walt and Jesse acquire the magnet from **Joe**, a junkyard owner, and execute the plan to wipe the laptop while parked outside the police station. The operation succeeds, but they are forced to **abandon their truck** to escape. As they drive away, Walt defiantly insists to Mike that **everything is settled**, despite Mike's doubts.

Meanwhile, **Saul Goodman** approaches Skyler at the **car wash** and informs her that **Ted Beneke** survived the injury from his encounter with Saul's men, **Kuby** and **Huell**. An **intimidated Ted** later tells Skyler he will remain **silent** about what caused his injury. Elsewhere, Walt argues with Saul about the lawyer's failure to inform him that Skyler had **bailed out Ted** with Walt's money. The episode concludes with Walt, Jesse, and Mike united in their attempt to cover their tracks as law enforcement closes in.
