Death Note Episode 16: Decision

Misa loses her memories of being the second Kira after relinquishing ownership of her Death Note to Rem, returning to her normal life as a teenage idol with no recollection of her time as a killer.

Light enters the interrogation room and confesses to L that he might be Kira, but unconsciously—theorizing that "another him" could be killing in his sleep. He requests to be confined for 50 days to prove his innocence, and his father Soichiro, unhappy with the accusation, requests confinement as well.

While imprisoned, Light executes his plan: he signals Ryuk by saying "get rid of it," instructing the shinigami to take back the Death Note. Light relinquishes ownership of Rem's Death Note in a misty forest, but crucially retains his memories because he still owns Ryuk's Death Note, which he has buried in the forest.

As Ryuk leaves with the Death Note, Light loses his memories of being Kira and becomes genuinely bewildered during questioning, vehemently denying to L that he is Kira. His confusion appears authentic to observers.

The investigation team interrogates Misa, but she remembers nothing of her experience as the second Kira, leaving them perplexed. L withholds information about the resumed Kira executions from Light, still suspecting him.

One week after Light's confinement, Kira executions resume—enough to compensate for the two-week period when no murders occurred. L observes that the killings continuing while Light is imprisoned under constant surveillance only strengthens the case against him, though the question remains whether Light was conscious of his actions as Kira.
