Death Note Episode 19: Matsuda

Matsuda, feeling inferior to the other Task Force members due to his minimal contributions to the Kira case, decides to take matters into his own hands and investigate the Yotsuba Group, which he can see from the film set where he's assigned to watch Misa.

While Misa films a movie scene as an angel alongside actor Hideki Ryuga, Matsuda abandons his post and sneaks into the Yotsuba building. After running up seventeen floors, he overhears two businessmen discussing a private weekend meeting. Following them to the 19th floor, he eavesdrops on their conversation and learns they are discussing Kira.

Matsuda manages to listen in on a larger meeting where eight businessmen are determining who to kill, confirming Yotsuba's connection to Kira. However, he is discovered eavesdropping and apprehended by the businessmen's bodyguards. Using a fake identity card provided by Watari, he identifies himself as Misa's manager, Taro Matsui, and attempts to convince them he's there to discuss a commercial deal involving her.

Suspicious but uncertain whether he's a corporate spy, the businessmen decide they cannot risk letting him leave alive. L calls Matsuda on his phone using code to confirm he's in danger and instructs him to fake his own death. Following L's plan, Matsuda pretends to be drunk, stumbles back into the room, and performs a handstand on the balcony railing several stories up before appearing to fall. The Yotsuba group believes he has died in the fall.

In a later meeting, one of the Yotsuba members decides to leave the group out of fear he may face consequences for Kira's actions.
