Death Note Episode 22: Guidance

Season 1· aired 2007-03-14· canon

Thanks to Misa, the Task Force now knows the identity of the new Kira and L plans an elaborate scheme to smoke him out of hiding.

Full recap

L ponders the implications of Kyosuke Higuchi potentially being Kira, questioning how Misa could have gone so far in tricking him, and decides they need undeniable proof by observing if criminal killings stop once Higuchi is caught; he also resolves not to arrest Higuchi until they uncover his exact killing method.

Light confronts Misa privately, demanding to know how she manipulated Higuchi without contradicting her story later; Misa explains she flirted with him at a bar, wrote his name on a Death Note scrap to control him temporarily, and got him to reveal his face and name, carefully omitting any shinigami's involvement, which frustrates Light.

L instructs Wedy to install cameras and wiretaps in Higuchi's home despite its high-tech security, but she reports it's nearly impossible after already bugging the Yotsuba office and members' homes; L shifts focus to a trap, announcing they suspect Higuchi but won't arrest him yet to prevent him from passing on his power like previous Kiras, deducing the power transfer requires the user's willing choice.

L devises a broadcast on a minor TV station featuring Matsuda as a "witness" behind a screen, claiming insider knowledge of Kira's identity from the Yotsuba Group and promising to reveal it at the program's end, baiting Higuchi into action; Matsuda agrees despite the risks, aware an "accident" will expose his face for Higuchi to recognize.

As the broadcast airs, Higuchi panics in the Yotsuba meeting, unable to contact Misa (who hangs up on him while with the task force) or stop the show without arousing suspicion; Namikawa notes only Kira could halt it, and Higuchi realizes speaking to the group would expose him.

Posing as L on the phone, Light calls Reiji Namikawa, bluffing that they'll catch Kira tonight and asking for Yotsuba cooperation; Reiji suspects Higuchi and remarks "This is the end for Kyosuke," confirming his suspicions when Light feigns surprise.

Light then calls the president of Misa's agency, Yoshida Productions, directing Higuchi (watching) to an office with employee files to find the "witness's" details before the reveal; with two hours left, Higuchi grabs a revolver, Death Note slips, and races off in his red sports car, tailed by Wedy, all per Light's plan.

Higuchi despairs over losing everything but suddenly erupts into manic laughter as they speed into the city, horrifying Rem.
