Death Note Episode 28: Impatience

Near suggests cooperating with Light on rescuing Sayu Yagami, who has been kidnapped, and insists the Japanese Task Force handle negotiations instead of the SPK. Light's team prepares to fly to Los Angeles, where Soichiro vows to sacrifice himself if needed to save Sayu; Light rebukes him, urging him to prioritize both their lives.

A kidnapper contacts Soichiro at the airport, diverting him to a different plane whose pilot, in league with the kidnappers, detours off course under the pretense of dropping off a passenger. Aizawa reports this to Light, who approves letting it proceed.

The kidnappers demand a Death Note authenticity test: Soichiro hands over the notebook, and a masked man writes the name of a mafia member who sold drugs behind their back, causing the man's televised heart attack death at their hideout. Satisfied, the kidnappers release Sayu to Soichiro via parachute and depart with the notebook, first by helicopter and then loading it onto an untrackable missile disguised among decoys.

Light contacts Near to track the helicopter; Near complies reluctantly but fails as the mafia boss remotely detonates the helicopter, killing the pilot. The Death Note is used to kill most SPK members, leaving Near and a few survivors; Ryuk prevents Light from lashing out at Misa over the failure.

Near calls Light, reprimanding him and the Task Force for surrendering the notebook without resistance, and reveals suspicions that Mello orchestrated the kidnapping as a rival in catching Kira. Near and Light agree to full information-sharing cooperation moving forward.
