Death Note Episode 29: Father
Mortified over allowing the Death Note to fall into Mello's hands in order to save his daughter, Soichiro puts himself into harm's way in order to get it back.
Full recap
The episode opens with Sayu Yagami sitting unresponsive in a wheelchair, pushed by her mother Sachiko through a peaceful countryside path, while Soichiro Yagami watches them sadly from afar, burdened by his family's suffering and his past decision to hand over a Death Note to Mello's group.
Light Yagami, alone in his hotel room, internally deduces that Near is L's successor leading the SPK while Mello lost out and now seeks the Death Note out of resentment; he converses with Ryuk about these rivals.
The shinigami Sidoh appears to Ryuk, desperate to recover his Death Note, which Ryuk directs him to find on his own; Sidoh then tracks it to the mafia hideout, forcing a frightened mafia member to touch the notebook to see him, after which the others do the same.
Sidoh reveals to the mafia that the last two Death Note rules are fake; Mello questions if Kira originally owned it, and they discuss ownership, with Light later confirming to Ryuk and Sidoh that he reclaimed it earlier and now considers himself its definitive owner.
The Japanese task force, including Soichiro, prepares to raid the mafia hideout using intel on locations and names already written in a Death Note by Light (planning to relinquish it); Soichiro makes a deal with Ryuk for Shinigami Eyes to see real names and lifespans.
During the raid, most mafia members die as scheduled from heart attacks, but Soichiro confronts Mello, who threatens to detonate explosives unless given the Death Note; unable to bring himself to shoot Mello despite the plan, Soichiro hesitates.
A surviving mafia member, Jose, shoots Soichiro with a sub-machine gun despite his bulletproof vest; as Mello and Jose struggle to seize the notebook from the wounded Soichiro, the rest of the task force arrives, shoots and kills Jose, but Mello detonates the explosives and escapes, injuring the team.
Soichiro, critically wounded, clings to the Death Note at the hospital; Light arrives, relinquishes ownership of that notebook (keeping Misa's), allowing Soichiro's new Shinigami Eyes to reveal Light's normal lifespan, convincing him Light is not Kira.
Light sheds emotional tears as Soichiro dies happily, believing his son innocent and expressing pride in him; later that night, Light returns the Death Note to Sidoh, who flies away, noting one notebook suffices for him.
Ryuk remarks that Death Note users become miserable, while Soichiro, who never used one despite the chance, died in happiness.
