Death Note Episode 30: Justice

Near begins the episode at SPK headquarters, sharing his theory with Anthony Rester that the Japanese Task Force is aiding Kira and that the second L is Kira himself. Meanwhile, the Investigation Team watches a broadcast from Sakura TV called *Kira's Kingdom*, hosted by Hitoshi Demegawa, who praises how crime is decreasing due to Kira's judgment.

SPK agent Halle Lidner is attacked in her home by a scarred man who forces his way into Near's headquarters using her as a hostage. The attacker, identifying himself as Mello, demands a photograph of himself from Near to protect himself from Kira, though he briefly considers killing Near with a gun. After obtaining the photo, Mello reveals crucial information: a Death Note is owned by a shinigami, and one of the rules in the notebook is fake.

Back with the Investigation Team, Near proposes testing the "13 day rule" by writing Mello's name in the Death Note to determine if the rule is genuine. Light, acting as L, questions the team about this theory. Most members oppose the test, though Matsuda initially shows eagerness to avenge his father Soichiro. When Near suggests that either the second L is Kira or someone on the team is collaborating with Kira, Aizawa begins to suspect Light's innocence.

Demegawa arrives in New York as Kira's messenger and broadcasts a worldwide announcement declaring the SPK an evil organization seeking to overthrow Kira. An angry mob attempts to break into the SPK building while Misa watches via television, prepared to kill Near as he exits. Light, taking control of Near's computer screens, falsely claims Mello is responsible for the broadcast. Light then reflects to himself that he has won.
