Death Note Episode 4: Pursuit

Light Yagami tells the shinigami Ryuk that he aims to build a world free of criminals, where he rules as a god, and rejects the Shinigami Eyes deal since it would shorten his lifespan.

Light experiments with the Death Note on incarcerated criminals, writing detailed instructions for their actions before heart attacks to test its control limits; six prisoners die exhibiting bizarre behaviors, such as writing confessions or strange messages, but only within their capabilities and knowledge.

Chief Soichiro Yagami receives reports of the deaths at the police station, and L, observing via Watari, suspects Kira now manipulates victims' actions pre-death and instructs withholding details from the media to avoid tipping off the killer.

Light hacks into his father's investigation notes on a computer, confirming L's suspicions and the Death Note's expanded powers, including precise timing within 40 seconds of specifying a heart attack cause.

To identify the man shadowing him, Light fakes a date to Spaceworld with classmate Yuri, inviting the tracker onto the bus; a gun-wielding criminal named Kiichiro Osoreda—under Light's prior Death Note control—boards, hijacks the bus, and demands ransom from Spaceworld while holding passengers hostage.

Amid the chaos, Light drops a torn Death Note page disguised as date plans; Osoreda picks it up, sees Ryuk, panics, and empties his gun at the shinigami, who explains bullets can't harm him and that touching a Death Note page reveals shinigami until the owner's death or the note's completion.

Osoreda flees the stopped bus and is struck dead by a white sedan at exactly 11:45 a.m., as Light wrote.

Police question witnesses, including the tracker, who identifies himself to Light as FBI agent Raye Penber; after Penber leaves, Light writes in the Death Note that Penber will die next, declaring "The Death Note never fails."
