Death Note Episode 7: Overcast

Light Yagami encounters Raye Penber's fiancée on her way to police headquarters and stops her, claiming the Kira investigators are impossible to meet in person.

He writes "Shoko Maki"—the alias she provides—in the Death Note, specifying that she will think of the best way to commit suicide without bothering others or leaving her body discoverable, obsess over it, carry it out, and die within 48 hours. When nothing happens after 40 seconds, Light grows confused and panicked, realizing from Ryuk's laughter that it's a fake name; she must be hiding her real identity to protect herself from Kira, suspecting Penber died after showing his ID on the bus. Fearing she'll reach the station and expose him if task force members return, Light desperately coaxes details from her about the bus hijacking, pretending to work for L to gain her trust while using a Death Note page to record them.

Meanwhile, L reveals his face to the task force in their headquarters meeting, confirming his identity and introducing Watari without his usual disguise. L equips the five detectives—Soichiro Yagami, Shuichi Aizawa, Kanzo Mogi, Hideki Ide, and Masahiko Matsuda—with new aliases, badges, and belt communicators that send distress signals if they're in trouble or if Kira contacts them; he mandates one member stay at HQ at all times to handle calls and visitors with potential Kira information.

As Light's phone nearly rings from his father, he silences it and continues manipulating the woman, who remains sharp and distrustful, circling the conversation without yielding her real name. She shares her theory that Kira was on the bus and killed Penber after seeing his ID during the investigation of passengers. Finally gaining enough trust, she shows her driver's license, allowing Light to write her real name, **Naomi Misora**, next to the cause of death. Moments later, as she questions his watch-checking, Light reveals, "It's because I'm Kira," before she wanders off; the Death Note's effect takes hold, sending her to carry out her suicide in a hidden manner. A police officer passes just after they part, narrowly missing them. Light reflects on the close call, relieved.
