Death Note Episode 8: Glare

The Task Force investigates Raye Penber's death over matcha green tea ice cream, discovering crucial details from surveillance footage. L observes that Penber strained to look inside the train before the doors closed and left an envelope on the train that didn't belong to him, leading L to suspect Kira may have been aboard.

When the Task Force discovers that Naomi Misora, Penber's fiancée, has disappeared the day after his death, L theorizes she was investigating Kira independently but was found and eliminated by him. Despite some team members suggesting she committed suicide, L's recollection of Misora's emotional strength convinces him otherwise.

L orders surveillance cameras and wiretaps placed in the homes of the two families Penber was investigating: Chief Yagami and Deputy Director Kitamura. Chief Yagami reluctantly approves the order despite personal offense, believing the investigation cannot be compromised by personal feelings.

Light immediately detects the surveillance upon arriving home, noticing his door-rigging systems have been disturbed. He enlists Ryuk's help to locate all the cameras in his room. That evening, Light sees L's televised message about 1500 FBI investigators being sent to Japan and recognizes it as a strategic move rather than genuine information.

Light retrieves a bag of potato chips containing a hidden mini LCD television and a piece of Death Note taped inside. While appearing to study at his desk on camera, he uses the Death Note to kill two criminals whose identities he could not have legitimately known, creating an alibi that demonstrates his innocence. Chief Yagami becomes convinced of Light's innocence based on this display, but L remains unconvinced.
