Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Episode 36: What Are You?

Tanjiro, Zenitsu, and Inosuke each infiltrate one of the three houses where Uzui’s wives are believed to be working, trying to gather information without drawing attention. In parallel, the episode shows the uneasy atmosphere inside the district: people are frightened, servants are tight-lipped, and strange disappearances have begun to draw suspicion.

In the Ogimoto House, Inosuke hears rumors about Makio and rushes into her room after growing suspicious. There, he finds that Makio has been captured and is being questioned by a demon about letters and who they are for, with the demon even addressing her by name. Inosuke senses something wrong and moves to investigate further.

In the Kyogoku House, Zenitsu notices that, despite being alert, he has not heard anyone mention Hinatsuru since entering the house. He also learns that the recent death of the house’s owner has made everyone fearful and unwilling to speak openly, which makes his search even harder.

The episode also cuts back to a disturbing scene from the district’s past, showing an Oiran in a brothel in Yoshiwara being confronted by an attendant about multiple disappearances in the house. The attendant enters the room, closes the door, and then moments later the prostitute emerges while the attendant has vanished without a trace.

Zenitsu’s side of the episode ends with him following the sound of a crying young girl, only to find her in a room left in shocking disarray. The episode uses that discovery to deepen the sense that something is very wrong inside the house.
