Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Episode 59: To Bring a Smile to One`s Face

Tanjiro finishes training with Tengen Uzui and arrives at the next Hashira Training stop, where Muichiro Tokito is drilling swordsmen with relentless, harsh instruction. The trainees already there are visibly worn down, and Muichiro’s cold attitude makes the atmosphere tense from the start.

Tanjiro steps into Muichiro’s dojo and finds him lecturing while sparring with a trainee. When Tanjiro says he has already endured enough, Muichiro dismisses him, tells him he will be eaten by demons because he is not trying hard enough, and orders him to keep fighting.

From there, the episode focuses on the training itself and the gap between Muichiro’s expectations and the trainees’ current ability. Muichiro keeps pushing them with blunt criticism, including remarks that they would already have been killed in a real battle, which leaves some of the Demon Slayer swordsmen discouraged and exhausted. Tanjiro, however, remains determined and continues working through the Rapid Movement Training, forcing himself to improve under Muichiro’s supervision.

The episode’s main impression is one of severe, uncompromising training: Muichiro is strict to the point of cruelty, while Tanjiro stays committed despite the strain. The title’s idea of “bringing a smile to one’s face” is reflected in Tanjiro’s persistence and the possibility that his effort may eventually change the mood of the dojo, but this episode itself mainly establishes the harshness of the training and Tanjiro’s refusal to quit.
