Dexter Episode 10: Seeing Red

A jar of blood containing a hotel key sends Miami Metro to a blood-soaked room, and the sight triggers a buried childhood memory in Dexter that overwhelms him. At the same time, Rita is threatened with losing custody of her children after Paul accuses her of assault, and Dexter, Angel, Debra, and the Ice Truck Killer case all become entangled in the episode’s events.

Miami Metro receives a jar full of blood with a key inside, and the key leads Debra and Doakes to a hotel room that has been completely covered in blood. Dexter is sent in first to examine the room, but the gruesome scene causes him to freeze up as a childhood memory surfaces: he sees himself as a very young child sitting in a pool of blood. He panics and runs out of the room.

Rudy encourages Dexter to go back into the room, and Dexter does so long enough for the memory to break open further. He relives the traumatic event from his childhood and remembers witnessing his mother being killed with a chainsaw when he was three years old.

While that investigation is unfolding, Rita is charged after Paul accuses her of assault, and she faces the possibility of losing custody of her children. Dexter learns what is happening and takes action to protect Rita and the children.

Angel follows a lead connected to the Ice Truck Killer and becomes interested in a woman with a prosthetic limb, which supports his suspicion that the killer may have a fetish related to amputees. Meanwhile, Debra becomes increasingly drawn to Rudy, even as he spends time with Dexter and helps him through the hotel-room crisis.

The episode also shows tensions inside the department, with the Ice Truck Killer case continuing to generate pressure and concern over how the investigation is being handled.
