Dexter Episode 14: Waiting to Exhale

Season 2· aired 2007-10-07

Dexter is finding it hard to have closure on killing his brother. There is a new FBI agent to head the "Bay Harbor Butcher" case. Debra is finding it tough to put the past behind her.

Full recap

Dexter is under pressure on two fronts: the discovery of bodies dumped in the harbor has launched a major investigation, and he is still obsessed with finding and killing Little Chino. The episode follows him as he tries to regain control of his life while the police, the FBI, and his own guilt close in on him.

At the station, Miami Metro and the FBI brief the department on the case, and Special Agent Frank Lundy arrives to lead the investigation into the newly uncovered serial killer later nicknamed the “Bay Harbor Butcher.” Dexter is immediately alarmed by Lundy’s involvement because the task force means more scrutiny on his own secret activities.

Meanwhile, Dexter continues tracking Little Chino, but his attempt to kill him does not go as planned. Little Chino seems aware he is being hunted and eventually turns the tables, setting up an ambush that forces Dexter to escape instead of completing the kill.

A separate murder investigation pulls Dexter deeper into the episode’s emotional conflict. A woman named Eva is found dead, and Dexter feels responsible because he believes that if he had killed Little Chino earlier, Eva might still be alive. The victim’s death leaves behind a child, which intensifies Dexter’s guilt.

The police soon get a break when Little Chino walks into the station with his lawyer and produces security footage that gives him an alibi for Eva’s murder. That development makes Dexter’s window of opportunity even narrower, and the chase for Little Chino becomes more urgent.

Debra is still struggling with the aftermath of her trauma, and it affects her behavior on the job. She becomes increasingly unstable under pressure, but her actions still lead to a drug bust involving a child who identifies Little Chino’s gang as connected to Eva’s death.

Rita is dealing with the death of Paul and is making funeral arrangements. She confronts Dexter emotionally about his role in what happened, and Dexter tries to deflect and explain himself in a way that does not fully reveal the truth. Their conversation shows that Rita is beginning to suspect that something is deeply wrong, even if she does not understand it yet.

At Paul’s funeral, Dexter is unsettled and experiences a hallucination of Brian watching him, underscoring how unstable he feels throughout the episode.

The climax comes when Little Chino targets the child who identified his gang. Dexter arrives in time, sedates Little Chino, saves the child, and finally kills Chino himself. He then disposes of the body in a new dumping location, one chosen to make it harder for anyone to find the remains.

The episode ends with Dexter trying to move forward, but the events around him make it clear that both his private life and his secret world are becoming harder to control.
