Dexter Episode 4: Let's Give the Boy a Hand

A severed hand is found on a beach, and the investigation quickly pulls Dexter into a case that starts to mirror his own childhood memories. By the end of the episode, Dexter finds the victim alive but chooses not to kill him, even though the killer seems to be baiting him into doing exactly that.

The episode opens with Dexter examining a hand discovered on the beach. The hand is identified as belonging to Tony Tucci, the man Lieutenant LaGuerta had publicly named as the Ice Truck Killer suspect, forcing her to confront his mother and apologize for accusing her son on television.

As the investigation continues, more of Tucci’s body parts turn up in locations tied to Dexter’s childhood. Dexter realizes the killer is not just dumping remains randomly but is deliberately using places from his past to send him a message. He remembers visiting the beach as a child with Harry, who lectured him about pretending to feel emotions to make other people happy.

Dexter later looks through a family photo album and notices the Ice Truck Killer has broken into his apartment, suggesting the killer is studying him directly rather than simply staging gruesome scenes. Another severed body part is found near an old soccer field where Dexter used to play, and Dexter tells Doakes that the killer’s message matters more than the usual ritual of the murders, though he cannot explain why.

The investigation reveals that Tucci is still alive and is being dismembered piece by piece. Dexter follows the clues to an abandoned hospital and finds Tucci blindfolded and strapped to a gurney. Tucci begs Dexter to kill him, but Dexter refuses, because his code will not allow him to kill an innocent man. Dexter then anonymously tips off Debra and leaves the scene.

Several side stories run through the episode. Doakes is watched by Guerrero’s men, is later lured into danger, and is ultimately used as bait before the police arrive and arrest Guerrero and his crew. LaGuerta continues dealing with the fallout of her false accusation against Tucci. Batista struggles with a personal gift for his wife. Rita deals with trouble from a noisy neighbor’s barking dog and decides to take action about it.
