Dexter Episode 40: Dex Takes a Holiday

Rita leaves town with the kids for a wedding, giving Dexter three days alone, and he immediately treats the time like a vacation while planning to kill a new target, police officer Zoey Kruger, whom he suspects of murdering her husband and child.

Dexter begins gathering evidence against Zoey by visiting her house during an open house and searching for anything incriminating, including checking the garbage disposal, where he finds signs of blood and gunshot residue. To keep Zoey interested and draw her toward him, he asks for Darius Rey’s case file, which causes her to follow him and confront him at a gas station.

When Zoey pulls up behind him, Dexter makes it clear that he knows she killed her family and that he will report her. After that confrontation, Zoey becomes convinced Dexter is a threat and later sneaks into his house, apparently intending to kill him, but he has already prepared for that move and sedates her instead.

Dexter then takes Zoey to her daughter’s room and stages the scene so it looks as though she fled the country, with evidence being sent in to close the case. In their final exchange, Dexter concludes that she killed her family to escape responsibility and feel free, and Zoey confirms that this is true; Dexter then kills her and returns home in time to clean up before Rita and the children come back.

Meanwhile, Frank Lundy continues tracking the Trinity Killer by examining an old murder site from decades earlier, where he runs into Trinity himself and becomes suspicious of him after a brief encounter. Debra and Lundy talk after their meeting, and as Debra leaves the parking lot, an assailant shoots her and Lundy; Lundy is killed, Debra is critically wounded, and the attacker robs Lundy before escaping.
