Dexter Episode 41: Dirty Harry

Dexter rushes to the hotel parking lot after Debra and Frank Lundy are shot, learns that Debra will survive, and realizes Lundy has been killed. The police treat it as another attack by the so-called Vacation Murderer, but Dexter quickly becomes convinced that Trinity is responsible and decides to investigate on his own.

At the hospital, Debra is physically shaken and emotionally wrecked, and she tells Anton the truth about what happened with Lundy before breaking up with him. Dexter tries to stay close to the case, but Angel urges him to step back for his own safety. Meanwhile, Dexter uses Lundy’s recordings to trace Trinity’s pattern and concludes that the killer is likely planning to strike at an office building.

Because he does not yet know Trinity’s face, Dexter breaks into the evidence room to get the remaining tape that contains Trinity’s physical description. Before leaving to hunt him, he meets Debra at the parking lot where Lundy was killed. Debra is devastated and tells Dexter she feels like she has lost everything, then angrily tells him he does not appreciate the life he has with Rita and the children; Dexter comforts her while she cries.

Dexter goes home to get his tools, but Rita has already searched the apartment and found evidence that he has kept his separate place. Dexter explains the hidden trunk in his bedroom by showing her the rifle that belonged to Harry and says he did not want a gun in her house, but Rita does not believe him. She tells him to sleep at his apartment while they think about what to do about their marriage.

Dexter heads to the office building he believes Trinity will target and initially thinks the killer is going after a security guard, but he discovers that the real target is someone else. He then watches Trinity murder a man with a hammer, unable to stop it, and notices that Trinity removes a footage disk so the killing will not be recorded. Trinity calmly leaves in his van, and Dexter follows him to a house. When Dexter prepares to sneak in and sedate him, he is shocked to see Trinity welcomed inside by his wife and children, revealing that the killer appears to have a normal family life.
