Season 4· aired 2009-11-22

Full recap

Dexter follows Arthur Mitchell to his home and sees him publicly humiliate Jonah by destroying his trophies and acting controlling and cruel. After Jonah drives off and angrily smashes up Arthur’s car, he tells Dexter that Arthur is abusive and that the rest of the family is trapped in the same situation, which leads Dexter to agree to spend Thanksgiving with them the next day.

At the Mitchell house, Dexter keeps observing the family and sees more signs that the household is tightly controlled and deeply dysfunctional. Arthur locks Rebecca’s bedroom, and later Jonah becomes the target of Arthur’s anger again when Arthur breaks one of Jonah’s fingers during a confrontation.

Meanwhile, Dexter goes back to Rita’s house, where Thanksgiving preparations are underway and the household is filling up with guests. Debra spends the holiday digging deeper into the Trinity case and realizes something new about Christine, while Quinn spends time with Christine and later leaves her apartment after Thanksgiving dinner.

At the Mitchell Thanksgiving dinner, each person is asked to say what they are thankful for, but the atmosphere quickly turns hostile. Arthur is offended when no one gives thanks for him, Jonah snaps back at him, and Arthur retaliates by insulting Sally and calling Rebecca by the wrong name, “Vera.” Jonah finally explodes, accusing Arthur of ruining their lives and destroying items around the house, including Vera’s urn.

Arthur then attacks Jonah, and Dexter intervenes, pulling Arthur into the kitchen. Dexter loses control and reveals how much he wants to kill Arthur, but Sally and Rebecca step in and force him to leave before he can do anything further.

On the drive home, Dexter talks to Harry in his mind about what he has just seen and insists that Arthur’s abuse is different from his own code-driven behavior. When Dexter gets home, he is surprised by Rita’s warm welcome, which contrasts sharply with the chaos he has just left behind.

Elsewhere, Debra continues her Thanksgiving work on the Trinity investigation, and Christine ends the episode by answering a knock at her door after Quinn has already left. The visitor is Arthur, and Christine calmly greets him as “Dad.”
