FROM Episode 4: A Rock and a Farway

Victor begins the episode as a child, climbing out of a root cellar on the edge of town and finding the road covered with dead bodies. The episode then shifts to the present, where he is quietly drawing Julie while she sleeps at Colony House; when she wakes and sees him, she recoils in fear, and Victor asks whether she has ever remembered a dream so vividly that it might have really happened.

At Colony House, Julie is still adjusting to life there, but she starts to find some comfort among the people she meets. Jim and Tabitha, meanwhile, are having a difficult time with each other and argue about their marriage and the situation they are trapped in.

Boyd is still dealing with the aftermath of Frank’s death and the weight of being the town’s protector. He cleans out the box, handles what remains of Frank’s body, and brings it to the church, while Father Khatri presses him to accept the role of leader rather than punishing himself.

Jim takes Ethan to the diner, where he ends up breaking down in the bathroom. At the diner, Victor sits with Ethan and tells him that the trees have moved four inches closer, then shows him the picture he drew of the boy in the woods. When Jim finds the two together, he angrily confronts Victor in front of everyone.

Kenny meets Jade at the root cellar and shows him what he thinks he saw the day before. Separately, Fatima makes space for Julie in her and Ellis’s room, showing Julie a small kindness as she settles in.

Ethan later slips away with Victor into the forest, where Victor tries to show him the boy he has been looking for. Victor tells Ethan that he saw the boy in white before the two cars arrived in town. The two discover the stone-covered tree marked with a smiley face, toss rocks into it, and watch as the rocks come back out. Victor becomes visibly frightened when he hears a dog barking.

Back at the house, Jim asks Boyd to speak with Victor and Donna about Victor spending time with Ethan. Boyd also continues trying to hold the community together while Father Khatri encourages him to stay in his position and not let guilt define him.

The forest turns dangerous when dogs surround Jim and Tabitha, but Victor scares them away by firing gunshots. The episode also includes a flashback to young Victor in the town, where he again sees the boy in white and the barking dog among the dead bodies.

At the diner, Sara receives another horrifying message: a marking appears on her arm that says “kill the boy,” and she has a seizure soon afterward.

By the end of the episode, Victor begins digging graves and says he is “getting a head start this time,” showing that whatever he has lived through has convinced him more than ever that more death is coming.
