Game of Thrones Episode 4: Cripples, Bastards, and Broken Things

A **meeting at Winterfell** gives the episode its title’s theme of overlooked and broken people, while several other storylines advance in parallel: **Ned** continues investigating Jon Arryn’s death, **Jon** befriends and protects **Samwell Tarly** at Castle Black, **Tyrion** visits Winterfell and is later captured on the road, and **Daenerys** faces a major test in Vaes Dothrak.

At **Winterfell**, Bran has a disturbing dream in which he sees a raven with three eyes, then wakes still confined to bed after his fall. Soon after, **Tyrion Lannister** arrives as a guest. He asks Bran whether he remembers anything about the day he was thrown, and Maester Luwin says Bran remembers nothing. Tyrion brings Bran a design for a special saddle that would let him ride a horse despite his injury, showing an unusual kindness toward him. In conversation with Robb Stark, Tyrion explains that he has a soft spot for “cripples, bastards, and broken things,” then declines Winterfell’s hospitality and chooses to stay elsewhere. On his way out, Tyrion exchanges barbed remarks with **Theon Greyjoy** and quickly realizes that Catelyn Stark is not at Winterfell.

At **King’s Landing**, **Ned Stark** keeps digging into the circumstances of **Jon Arryn’s** death. His search leads him to a record tying Arryn’s final weeks to a book about the bloodlines of the noble families, which points him toward the king’s illegitimate children. This gives Ned a clearer sense that Arryn died while investigating something sensitive about the royal line.

At **Castle Black**, Jon Snow sees how badly **Samwell Tarly** is being treated by the other recruits. Sam is timid, overweight, and overwhelmed by training, and Jon begins looking out for him. Jon later confronts the bullies on Sam’s behalf, helping him avoid more abuse and establishing their friendship.

In **Vaes Dothrak**, **Daenerys** is frustrated by Viserys’s continued arrogance and volatility. She is growing into a stronger presence among the Dothraki, while Viserys becomes more isolated and desperate as he clashes with those around him.

A separate storyline centers on **Catelyn Stark** and her effort to move against the men who attacked Bran. She travels with **Ser Rodrik** and later reaches the valley home of her sister Lysa Arryn, where she learns more about the political situation surrounding Jon Arryn’s death and the Stark family’s growing danger. Her actions help push the northern plot forward by connecting the attack on Bran to the larger conflict around the crown.

By the end of the episode, the main threads have all tightened: Ned’s suspicion deepens, Jon has found a new ally in Sam, Tyrion has made an unexpected connection at Winterfell, and Daenerys’s position in the Dothraki camp remains tense and unstable.
