Viserys hosts a tournament to celebrate the birth of his second child. Rhaenyra welcomes her uncle Daemon back to the Red Keep.

Full recap

The episode opens with a flashback to the Great Council at Harrenhal, where elderly King Jaehaerys I Targaryen convenes the lords of Westeros to choose his successor between his eldest grandchild, Princess Rhaenys, and his eldest grandson, Viserys; the lords select Viserys due to Rhaenys's gender, naming him heir to the Iron Throne.

Nine years later, in King's Landing, a grand tourney celebrates Prince Viserys's coronation as king, with knights competing amid cheers from the crowd; young Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen observes from the stands, impressing onlookers with her knowledge of the participants.

Meanwhile, Queen Aemma Arryn struggles in childbirth inside the Red Keep; Grand Maester Mellos informs the anguished King Viserys that the baby—a son—is in breech position and cannot be turned, forcing a choice between saving his wife or the child, as both may die otherwise; Viserys reluctantly consents to cut the baby out, leading to a graphic scene where Aemma dies screaming in agony, but the boy, Baelon, is born alive—for a day.

Viserys and Rhaenyra mourn together in the royal crypt, where Rhaenyra comforts her father amid his grief over losing both wife and son.

That night, Prince Daemon Targaryen—Viserys's younger brother and current heir presumptive—celebrates Baelon's death in a Flea Bottom brothel with his gold-cloaked City Watch, toasting the infant as "heir for a day" while his men revel; news of this mockery spreads quickly.

Earlier, Daemon had unleashed his City Watch on King's Landing's streets, ordering brutal enforcement against criminals, resulting in public beheadings, mutilations, and assaults, as he declares the city will fear the color gold.

The Small Council convenes, with Hand of the King Otto Hightower criticizing Daemon's violent methods and suggesting he return to his neglected wife in the Vale; Daemon retorts by insulting her as a "bronze bitch" and offering her to any taker, alarming the council who view him as a potential tyrant.

Viserys summons Daemon to the throne room, furious over the brothel rant; Daemon defends himself by claiming shared grief and accusing Otto of manipulating the king, but Viserys banishes him from court, stripping his claim to the throne and ordering him to Runestone; Daemon departs the city immediately.

With Daemon removed, Viserys names Rhaenyra as his new heir, the Princess of Dragonstone; he shares a tender moment with her atop the Red Keep, gifting her a Valyrian steel necklace once belonging to Aemma, and invokes the family secret of "the Song of Ice and Fire," a prophecy Aegon the Conqueror heeded.

Viserys summons the great lords to the throne room, where they kneel and pledge fealty to him and Rhaenyra as his successor; the episode closes on Rhaenyra in regal attire, gazing determinedly amid the oaths.
