House of the Dragon Episode 2: The Rogue Prince

The episode opens six months after Queen Aemma's death, with a gruesome scene on a beach where soldiers are being devoured by crabs—victims of the Crab Feeder, a warlord controlling the Stepstones. King Viserys must select a new member of the Kingsguard to replace the deceased Ser Ryam.

At the Small Council, Lord Corlys demands action against the Crab Feeder, whose forces have destroyed three of his ships. He wants to seize the Stepstones and wage war against the Free Cities, but King Viserys refuses, prioritizing peace for the realm. Corlys expresses concern that enemies perceive weakness: the Queen has died, a girl has been named heir for the first time, Daemon has taken Dragonstone without consequence, and a foreign power now controls a crucial shipping location.

The king faces pressure to secure the succession through marriage. Viserys meets with Corlys and his wife, Princess Rhaenys, in the Red Keep's gardens. Corlys proposes a marriage between Viserys and his twelve-year-old daughter Laena, which would unite House Targaryen's dragons with House Velaryon's fleet. However, Viserys is viscerally disgusted by the prospect.

Instead, King Viserys announces his betrothal to **Alicent Hightower**, the daughter of Lord Otto Hightower. This shocks the court and deeply wounds Rhaenyra, who considers Alicent her closest friend. The king has been having private conversations with Alicent, and he fears his daughter would not understand them. Rhaenyra also learns that Ser Criston Cole has been selected as the newest member of the Kingsguard—a choice she herself influenced.

Meanwhile, Prince Daemon, bored at Dragonstone, seeks his brother's attention by **stealing a dragon egg** from the Dragonpit. He leaves a missive announcing his intention to take his mistress Mysaria as his second wife in violation of the Faith. Since Mysaria is pregnant with his child, Daemon wishes to place the dragon egg in the infant's cradle, following Targaryen tradition. Notably, he steals the egg that had been chosen to lay beside the cradle of the late Prince Baelon—a mockery of his dead nephew that enrages King Viserys.

Otto Hightower is sent to Dragonstone to retrieve the egg. When Daemon refuses to surrender it, swords are drawn and his dragon arrives to defend him, its screeches terrifying those present. Before bloodshed erupts, **Princess Rhaenyra arrives on her dragon, Syrax**, dismounting to confront her uncle directly. She challenges Daemon, daring him to kill her if he truly wishes to reclaim his former status as heir. Unable to murder his niece in cold blood, Daemon begrudgingly gives her the dragon egg, then retreats into the castle with Mysaria. Rhaenyra returns the egg to the Dragonkeepers.

By episode's end, the enraged Lord Corlys opens his castle at Driftmark to Prince Daemon, seeking to persuade him to take military action against the Crab Feeder on the Stepstones—effectively declaring opposition to King Viserys.
