# House of the Dragon, Season 1, Episode 3: "Second of His Name"

The episode opens with Prince Daemon on his dragon Caraxes attacking the Stepstones, but he's forced to retreat when the enemy hides in caves to avoid dragonfire. The war against the Crabfeeder and the Triarchy has dragged on for years, with the Velaryon forces under Daemon's command faltering. King Viserys sends a royal letter offering aid of ten ships and 2,000 men, which enrages Daemon—he beats the messenger in frustration.

The realm celebrates Prince Aegon's second nameday, but the occasion is overshadowed by political tension. Many assume the newborn son will become heir despite Rhaenyra's earlier designation, creating competing factions: the Hightowers backing Aegon, the Velaryons backing Rhaenyra, and the Lannisters seeking greater influence. Viserys is visibly conflicted throughout the celebration.

During a royal hunt in the Kingswood, Jason Lannister approaches Viserys with a golden spear as a gift and proposes marriage to Rhaenyra, suggesting she would be adequately provided for as Lady of Casterly Rock now that she's no longer expected to be heir. When Rhaenyra learns of this proposal, she confronts her father in front of their assembled guests, and they argue publicly. Later, when daylight comes, a white hart appears before Rhaenyra and Ser Criston Cole during the hunt. Though Criston draws his sword, Rhaenyra chooses to let the animal go.

Viserys then has a private conversation with Rhaenyra and reaffirms that she remains heir to the throne despite Aegon's birth. He tells her she has the latitude to choose her own husband, though he reminds her how much she resembles her uncle Daemon. Rhaenyra is relieved and empowered by this decision.

In the Stepstones, Daemon uses Viserys's aid to execute a bold strategy. He raises a white flag to draw the Crabfeeder and his forces out of their caves, then cuts them down on the beach in a brutal ambush. With dragonfire support from above, the Velaryon forces achieve a decisive victory. Daemon pursues the Crabfeeder into a cave and emerges with half the enemy's body, establishing himself as a formidable warrior. The victory frees the shipping lanes and secures Daemon a force of battle-hardened veterans.

Rhaenyra leaves the Small Council chamber feeling doubly betrayed—by her father's initial wavering and by her best friend's involvement in the political maneuvering against her. Criston Cole joins the Kingsguard during this episode. Laena Velaryon is introduced.
