House of the Dragon Episode 21: Rhaenyra Triumphant

Daemon and two dragonriders confront Lord Ormund Hightower’s army and demand surrender, and Ormund ultimately kneels and swears fealty to Queen Rhaenyra in exchange for safe passage for his men. The episode then shifts to King’s Landing, where Rhaenyra begins to confront the practical chaos of ruling: the city is starving, the treasury is depleted, the Red Keep is plagued by rats, and she is flooded with demands from lords, servants, and allies.

Her first attempts to govern are tense and humiliating. She is forced to appear publicly while dealing with the onset of her menstrual cycle, and she struggles to project control despite her grief and exhaustion. She meets resistance from religious and political figures, including a hostile High Septon, and also learns that the crown’s finances are in far worse condition than expected. In response, she begins taking a harder line, including using the Goldcloaks to seize hoarded food from wealthy households so it can be redistributed.

Rhaenyra also clashes with Lord Corlys Velaryon over his request to have his sons legitimized, and the disagreement damages their relationship. At the same time, she deals with the question of Alicent’s remaining son, choosing not to kill him and instead arranging for him to be sent to the Wall, with Alicent allowed to see him one last time before he leaves. By the end of the episode, Rhaenyra’s triumph is clearly undercut by the burden of governing: she has the throne, but she is still learning that holding power requires compromise, force, and constant political calculation.
